Oct. 21, 2015 - Just when it appeared that the Concordia-Chicago men's soccer team was on the verge of a timely run to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference post-season after wins over Lakeland College and Benedictine University, the Cougars suffered consecutive shutout losses to Rockford University and, this afternoon, to Aurora University. In the latter, the Spartans broke open a close contest at AU's Vago Field with a three-goal outburst in the second half to finish with a 4-0 victory.
Freshman
Zach Adamec (Louisville, KY/Butler Traditional) made the start in goal for CUC, his second of the season, and he was solid early in the contest. Aurora owned an 11-4 advantage in shots for the first half, but Adamec made three saves to keep the Cougars close on the heels of the Spartans. Aurora did dent the net once, however, as Collin Foreman finished a cross in front of the net in the 24th minute. Meanwhile,
Daniel Hasko (Racine, WI/Racine Lutheran) and
Joey Malme (Green Bay, WI/NEW Lutheran) had the best opportunities for first-half tallies for CUC, but Aurora's Zach McFraland was up to the task on both occasions to keep the halftime score at 1-0, Spartans.
Aurora upped the lead to 2-0 less than two minutes into the second half, as Ben Edith finished from the left side of the box. The Spartans later sealed the deal with goals by Ian Connelly in the 63rd and 68th minutes. Concordia-Chicago was unable to rally as McFarland and the AU defense closed the door with strong defense. Hasko,
Roberto Avila (Cicero, IL/Morton East) and
Nick Cardenas (Hoffman Estates, IL/H.S.) looked to finish some chances, but McFarland was able to hold the line and keep CUC off the board.
The Spartans finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots. Adamec and McFarland both recorded five saves.
Concordia-Chicago (6-9-1, 2-6-0 NACC) will return home to host Concordia University Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon. Senior Day ceremonies will precede the 1:30 p.m. match.
