Box Score Sept. 3, 2014 – The offense was firing on all cylinders as the Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team enjoyed an explosive home opener. The Cougars rolled to a 3-0 record for the season with a lopsided 12-0 victory over Beloit College.
"We showed how potent our can be when we play as a team and move the ball quickly," said CUC head coach
Thomas Goines. "Beloit was organized and worked hard, but the ball really seemed to bounce our way throughout the game." The Cougars' dominance was such that goalkeepers
Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) and
Kim Bower (Island Lake, IL/Wauconda) had little action as they combined in goal for the shutout.
It took 13 minutes for the Cougars to open the scoring as
Alisha Johnson (Coal City, IL/H.S.) got the first of her two assists by crossing the ball from the right side to
Nikki Anderson (Montgomery, IL/Oswego) who headed the ball home. Just two minutes later,
Stephanie Brown (Streamwood, IL/H.S.) played Johnson in on a breakaway for the 2-0 lead and the first goal of a hat trick for Johnson.
Beloit regrouped but, in the 30
th minute,
Sarah LaCost (Mt Prospect, IL/Prospect) finished a ball in the box from
Liz Sanders (St Louis, MO/Parkway South). In the 37
th minute,
Katie Biga (Centerville, OH/H.S.) capped off a beautiful sequence of passes up the left side of the field and scored with the final pass coming from
Gabby Garza (Fenton, MI/Fenton). Seven minutes later, Biga cut back a ball from the left side and set up
Hillary Campbell (Dyer, IN/Lake Central) with just 21 seconds remaining in the half for a 5-0 score line.
The onslaught continued into the second half. Five minutes in, Johnson scored on a deeply angled ball from the right side that surprised the keeper. One minute later Johnson returned the favor from the first half and assisted on Brown's first goal of the season. Just two minutes after that,
Natalie Weinhold (St Peters, MO/Lutheran St Charles) played Johnson in for her hat trick.
The goals kept coming as Sanders headed home a corner kick served by
Haley Graner (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West).
Shawna Rembold (Rochester, MI/Stoney Creek) put in a cross from the right side that Campbell finished in the box. Three minutes later, Rembold boldly cut inside her defender and scored on a strong solo effort. The final goal of the game came off a punt by Bower that the Beloit center back cleared off of LaCost's shin guard. Lacost won the race to the deflected ball and slotted it by the keeper for the final margin of 12-0.
"This was another team victory as we played 27 players in the match today," said Goines. "The concentration that the players had throughout the game was good. We need to maintain this level of focus through each game we play this season. If we do that we will be successful more often than not."
The Cougars' next game is at home is on Sunday at 1 p.m. against MacMurray College as the first part of a women's/men's doubleheader.
