Box Score Sept. 30, 2014 – The Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team looked to bounce back from a tough recent stretch as they traveled to Milwaukee on Tuesday to play Alverno College. The Cougars were successful in their quest as they doused the Inferno with a convincing 4-1 victory in chilly Wisconsin.
"It was a good response after a tough week," said CUC head coach
Thomas Goines. "This was as close to a complete game as we have played this season. Our speed of play and ability to switch the point of attack were keys in establishing control of the game."
The Cougars dominated time of possession as they moved the ball at will across the field.
Allison Kruk (Elgin, IL/St. Edward),
Natalie Weinhold (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran St. Charles), and
Elizabeth Sanders (St. Louis, MO/Parkway South) all had shots in the opening minutes with Sanders' shot just missing as it clanged off the crossbar. The first goal of the game came in the 15
th minute from an assist by
Alisha Johnson (Coal City, IL/Coal City) on the right to Kruk who neatly controlled the ball and placed it in the side netting to open her account. Just six minutes later, Weinhold played Kruk in on goal up the middle of the field as the freshman scored her second goal of the game.
CUC continued to dominate play for the rest of the half. The defense played at the center back position by
Megan Albregts (Romney, IN/McCutcheon) was stellar. She also moved up into the midfield and controlled play from higher up the pitch. In the 41
st minute,
Katie Biga (Centerville, OH/Centerville) lofted a high cross that brushed off the keeper's fingertips and was finished by an alert Johnson at the back post to make it 3-0 going into half time.
In the second half, the Cougars continued to move the ball crisply as they put together two quality halves of soccer. They peppered the goal with shots. In particular,
Nikki Anderson (Montgomery, IL/Oswego) fought through and had a couple agonizingly close attempts.
Hillary Campbell (Dyer, IN/Lake Central) was also denied on several close attempts. Unfortunately, the Cougar's concentration waned with about 10 minutes to go in the game and they allowed two opportunities to the Inferno who fought hard all game. One of those opportunities wound up in the back of the Cougars' net as the lead was trimmed to 3-1. However, the Cougars responded just a minute later as Weinhold walked around two defenders and casually placed the ball past the keeper to regain the three-goal advantage. The final score ended 4-1 in favor of CUC.
The Cougars (6-4-0, 1-3-0 NACC) will get back to work quickly as they host non-conference opponent Mount Mary University on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
