April 04, 2014 – The Cougars hosted Wisconsin Lutheran College on Sunday in River Forest. CUC finished the week 6-12 overall, 3-5 in conference play after a 9-0 loss in game one and a 4-3 win in game two.
"The team played well overall, especially in the second game where we finished off the little plays," said CUC head coach
Sarah O'Malley-Fisher. "It was also great to see a well-deserved victory for
Alicia Salata (Bartlett, IL/Bartlett) who has been a bit unlucky in some of her past starts and pitched very well today."
In the first game of the day, pitcher
Meghan Johnson (Glendale Heights, IL/Glenbard West) was on the mound and had a relatively good day despite absoring the loss in which only four of the runs were earned.
The Warriors jumped on the Cougars early with four runs in the first three innings while the CUC bats had a tough time getting going. Salata had two of the five Concordia hits in the game. The teams were evenly matched until the top of the seventh when Wisconsin Lutheran plated five more runs for the final margin.
Salata started the second game of the day and pitched a complete game four-hit, three-strikeout performance for her first victory of the season.
The Warriors scored a single run in the top of the first inning, but the Cougars came back in the bottom of the second with two of their own. Salata singled to lead off the inning, and
Emmy Vowell (Peotone, IL/J.S.) sacrificed her to second base.
Michele Alexander (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) doubled to right field scoring Salata.
Hannah Solyom (Lombard, IL/Walther Lutheran) sacrificed her to third where she scored on an
Andrea Kelly (Elk Grove, CA/Laguna Creek) single to right field.
The Cougars put down the Warriors 1-2-3 in the top of the third and resumed their assault on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. Johnson singled to centerfield, and
Allie Bochat (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) sacrificed her to second base.
Jennie Jensen (Chicago, IL/Luther North) followed up with a double to left field scoring Johnson. After Salata grounded out, moving Jensen to third, Vowell doubled to center field for a 4-1 lead which they would not relinquish.
In the top of the seventh, WLC scored a pair of runs with two out. However, the Cougar defense was able to record the final out and seal the one-run victory.
Concordia returns to the diamond on Wednesday, April 9 for a doubleheader at Dominican University. The games start at 4:00 and 6:00.
