April 26, 2014 – The Cougar softball team held their Senior Day and played their final Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference games on Saturday as they hosted Aurora University in a doubleheader. Both games were short five-inning affairs, and both had a final score 10-2 in favor of the visitors.
In the first game, Aurora clubbed CUC with seven runs in the third inning on three Cougar errors. But in the bottom of the inning, it was senior
Andrea Kelly's (Elk Grove, CA/Laguna Creek) who drove in
Alicia Salata (Bartlett, IL/Bartlett) to get CUC on the board. Concordia's other run came in the fifth inning as
Emmy Vowell (Peotone, IL/Peotone) crushed the ball over the fence in straightaway centerfield.
In game two, the third inning was again unkind to the Cougars as Aurora scored six. In the bottom of the fourth,
Meghan Johnson (Glendale Heights, IL/Glenbard West) reached base on an error to lead off and was eventually doubled home by
Jenni Jensen (Chicago, IL/Luther North). CUC kept fighting until the end as Salata singled to lead off the bottom of the 5
th and was moved to third base on a double by
Hannah Solyom (Lombard, IL/Walther Lutheran). Kelly walked to load the bases and
Michele Alexander (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) reached base on a fielder's choice. Salata was forced out at the plate, but Solyom hustled around third and scored as the relay throw to first base was mishandled.
While the Cougars were hoping for better game results on Senior Day, the team had a nice turnout to honor its two seniors. Head Coach
Sarah O'Malley-Fisher said about the seniors, "
Andrea Kelly's work ethic and never say die attitude really helped her become a leader. She has gone above and beyond to be the best teammate and player possible.
Amber Mescall (Norridge, IL/Ridgewood) is a silent leader who constantly strives to be better. She is always thinking about other people that has made her a leader for us this year. That attitude and work ethic will make her a great teacher in the years to come."
Kelly remarked about her four years at Concordia-Chicago. "I can't begin to describe how much my team and this program mean to me. These past four years have been an unbelievable experience and I wouldn't be anywhere else. My teammates have been some of my best friends and I love them all. I wish them luck in their future seasons. Cougars for life! Hoorah!"
Mescall said about her experiences as a Cougar, "My time here has been a great experience. This team is the most amazing group of girls and I wouldn't trade them for the world. I know they will come out strong next year and surprise many people! I wish them the best of luck!"
Concordia-Chicago returns to the diamond on Monday, April 28. They play their final game against Elmhust College on the home field at 4:00.
