April 12, 2014 - The Cougars' softball team travelled to Wisconsin today to engage the Edgewood Eagles in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader. In both games, Concordia-Chicago got off to an early lead, only to see the hosts fight back and sweep the twinbill by scores of 9-7 and 5-4.
In game one, the Cougars put up their biggest inning of the season with a seven-spot in the second.
Alicia Salata (Bartlett, IL/H.S.) started the scoring with a two-run homer, her second of the week that scored
Jenni Jensen (Chicago, IL/Luther North) who had doubled.
Emmy Vowell's (Peotone, IL/H.S.) double and
Michele Alexander's (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) single produced a third run.
Hannah Solyom (Lombard, IL/Walther Lutheran) and
Andrea Kelly (Elk Grove, CA/Laguna Creek) kept the line moving with hits, loading the bases.
Meghan Johnson (Glendale Heights, IL/Glenbard West) then stepped up to the plate, and the Cougars' leading homerun hitter in 2013 unloaded her first of the season for a grand slam and a 7-0 lead.
Edgewood got a run back in the second and then stunned CUC with a six-run rally in the third to tie the game. Alyssa Schulting matched Johnson's grand slam with a four-run blast of her own, and Tiffani Pierce's two-run double later in the inning knotted up the game. The Eagles then won the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
In game two, Concordia-Chicago drew first blood once again. Kelly and Vowell started the game with singles, and Johnson doubled to rightfield to score both runners.
The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Edgewood strung together five hits. Jackie Diesch had the big hit of the inning, a two-run double that gave the hosts a 4-2 lead.
The Cougars played the comeback game in the sixth. The bases were loaded with two out when Alexander singled up the middle to score Salata and
Allie Bochat (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) for a 4-4 tie.
In the seventh, the Cougars had Kelly at second base with one out but left her stranded. The Eagles then won in the bottom of the inning as Schulting doubled and Katie Landon rapped a two-out single for the walk-off hit.
The Cougars (6-16, 3-9 NACC) are scheduled to host Rockford University on Sunday afternoon at 12:00.
