Cougar Softball Drops Doubleheader to Dominican

April 9, 2014 – The Concordia-Chicago softball team traveled 10 minutes to Dominican University's off-campus home field in Forest Park on Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Stars. The Cougars were swept in the games with the first being a 4-3 loss and the second 6-2.

In the first game Meghan Johnson (Glendale Heights, IL/Glenbard West) started on the mound and pitched all six innings but took the loss. Dominican scored all their runs in a single burst in the second inning. This came immediately after the Cougars scored two in the top of the inning. Jenni Jensen (Chicago, IL/Luther North) drew a one-out walk. Alicia Salata (Bartlett, IL/Bartlett) then homered off the top of the outfield fence in right-center to bring in both runs.

The Cougar bats continued to work as they loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning with only one out, but were unable to push any runs across the plate. In the top of the sixth, Johnson doubled to lead off the inning and Allie Bochat (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) singled to bring Johnson home. Jensen drew a walk and then Salata singled. Unfortunately, some confusion on the basepaths saw Jensen caught in a rundown at second base and Bochat advancing only to third. Salata stole second base to put runners on second and third with one out, but CUC could not get the tying run across the plate.

In the top of the seventh, Hannah Solyom (Lombard, IL/Walther Lutheran) attempted to rally the Cougars by singling to lead off the inning. But the Cougars did not threaten again, and game one of the doubleheader ended 4-3 Stars.

In game two, Salata started in the circle. Dominican scored two runs on two hits early, but Salata worked her way out of further damage. The game settled down until the top of the fourth when Jensen flied deep to centerfield and was potentially robbed of a home run or at least extra bases by the centerfielder. In the bottom of the fourth inning, three fielding errors allowed four unearned runs, which accounted for the six scored by the Stars in the game.

CUC battled back in the top of the sixth as Andrea Kelly (Elk Grove, CA/Laguna Creek) led off with a double. Haley Kalinichenko (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) grounded out moving Kelly to third. This was followed by a single by Johnson bringing in the first Concordia run of the game. In the top of the seventh, Emmy Vowell (Peotone, IL/H.S.) homered to center field for CUC's second run and the final margin in game two.

Concordia returns to the diamond for an away doubleheader Saturday versus Edgewood in Verona, Wisconsin. The games are scheduled at 12:00 and 2:00.
