Cougars Drop Two to Sabres

March 30, 2014 â€“ The Concordia-Chicago softball team hosted Marian University at Melas Park in Mount Prospect Sunday afternoon In the middle day of three consecutive double headers. The Cougars lost the first game 6-2 and the second 5-2. CUC is 4-6 (1-3 NACC) on the season.

In the first game of the day, pitcher Andrea Kelly (Elk Grove, CA/Laguna Creek) allowed only one run on a homer in the top of the second as she cruised through the first three innings. In the bottom of the second, the Cougars evened the score with two outs. Emmy Vowell (Peotone, IL/H.S.) singled, and Allie Bochat (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) doubled to bring the run home

The Cougars ran into trouble in the fifth as Marian put their first five batters on base, The Sabres wound up with three runs in the inning and then added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth. CUC did rally back for a run in the bottom of the seventh. Vowell was again on base and Michele Alexander (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) delivered a pinch-hit single to drive her in from second and make the final margin 6-2.

Meghan Johnson (Glendale Heights, IL/Glenbard West) was on the mound to start the second game. She pitched into the fifth inning with a good sinker, at one point getting 10 of 11 outs on ground balls. Alicia Salata (Bartlett, IL/H.S.) came into the game in the fifth inning and finished out the game.

In the bottom of the third, Kellyl ed off with a single to left and was moved to second base on another single to right by Emily Owens (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley). Johnson helped herself out by singling to center and bringing Kelly home for a 1-0 lead with no outs, but the Cougars left two runners stranded and managed just the one run.

In the top of the fourth and top of the fifth, the Sabres were able to drive in two runs each inning to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars were able to add a run as Jenni Jensen (Chicago, IL/Luther North) led off with a walk and was moved to second on a sacrifice by Salata. After a second out was recorded, Bochat hit a double to deep center that scored Jensen for the final run in a 5-2 game.

Concordia returns to the diamond for a third consecutive double header Monday versus North Central. The first game is scheduled at 3:30 with a second to follow 30 minutes after. These are the Cougars' opening home game in River Forest.
