Box Score Oct. 4, 2014 – The Concordia Cougars women's soccer team returned to conference play on Saturday as they traveled to Fond du Lac to play Marian University. It was a rematch of last year's NACC first round tournament game won by Marian. Unfortunately, history repeated itself on another cold rainy day in Wisconsin as Concordia-Chicago fell 4-0.
"It was the proverbial tale of two halves," said CUCÂ head coach
Thomas Goines. "We came out strong and played our game in the first half and dominated the game. In the second half, we stopped playing to feet and a quality Marian team was able to take advantage of our mistakes."
The Cougars dominated play in the wet and chilly first half with their possession-based attack. They played the ball to feet and had the Sabres' defense chasing them from side to side across the width of the field. Their play opened the middle of the field, and
Natalie Weinhold (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) opened the shooting gallery with one shot saved and another off the crossbar that agonizingly bounced over. After several near misses off of corner kicks taken by
Kaely Fitterling (Pattonville, MO/Pattonville),
Christina Kiotis (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) took her turn forcing the Sabres' keeper into good saves. The first half closed with a 0-0 game as
Stephanie Brown (Streamwood, IL/Streamwood) had several good shots, and
Sarah LaCost (Prospect, IL/Mt Prospect) took a couple dangerous corners. All in all, the Cougars outshot the Sabres 11-5 with a 7-2 advantage of shots on goal.
In the second half, trouble occurred. A ball that bounced off of several CUC shin guards outside the box was kicked toward goal and dropped just under the bar to put the Cougars behind. CUC fought back, but the Sabres scored three more goals between the 63th and 69
th minutes to put the game away.
The Cougars travel to Maranatha Baptist in Watertown, WI for a non-conference game on Thursday.
