Box Score Oct. 28, 2014 – The Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team hosted their final regular season game on Tuesday. The Division Street rivalry game against Dominican University was a tense affair which finally went to the Stars by a 1-0 score.
"I am proud of the fight the girls put in today," said CUC head coach
Thomas Goines. "It was a close game between two quality teams. It is disappointing for our season to be over this early, but now we have the offseason to improve. Many thanks for the four years that
Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge)Â and
Elise Bicek (Mokena, IL/Lincoln-Way East) have put into this program as they played their final game today.
Haley Graner (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West)Â and
Anne Rockert (Herscher, IL/H.S.)Â unfortunately finished their seasons earlier after sacrificing for the team. They will be missed."
The Cougars and Stars played even for the first 45 minutes as both teams had chances.
Alisha Johnson (Coal City, IL/H.S.) put in a tremendous amount of work on the right side before switching to the left where she had a great scoring chance on an inside cut.
Christina Kiotis (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) played her best game of the year as she controlled the center of the field with aplomb. Goines also cited the work of
Stephanie Brown (Streamwood, IL/H.S.) who put in yeoman's work at right back and center mid.
In the second half, Dominican had a slight advantage in shots, but Concordia-Chicago had more corner kicks. It was another back and forth affair that saw the Stars get a counter goal by Leah Tednes in the 78
th minute.
With less than 20 seconds remaining,
Elizabeth Sanders (St. Louis, MO/Parkway South) had a great turn and shot just past the left post as the Cougars looked for another comeback. It was not to be, and time ran out for the Cougars in the game and on the season.
The Cougars finished 11-7-0 overall and 4-6-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. The 11 wins mark the team's second-highest total in a season following last year's 12-3-4 mark.
The 2014 Cougar Women's Soccer team looked to build on a successful 2013 season, which saw many defensive records set! And the team delivered in spades on the offensive end of the field. A school record 58 goals and 50 assists in the season led the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). Those totals also put Concordia-Chicago on the national radar after receiving votes in the national rankings for the first time in school history.
The 58 goals scored ranked 22nd out of 423 teams in the nation at the NCAAÂ Division 3 level and the 50 assists ranked 13th. With 12 assists on the season.Â
Alisha Johnson set a
new CUC season record for assists, was top of the NACC, and ranked 13th nationally.
Collectively, the team set or extended 6 Team, Individual, and Career records throughout the 2014 season. The overall record of 11-7 provides a winning percentage in the top third of NCAA D3 teams. CUC will return all of the 2014 record setting offense in 2015.
The team's success was recognized by the NACC conference with
Natalie Weinhold at Honorable Mention All-Conference and
Allison Kruk as All-Freshman selections.
The Cougars are not just athletes, but students as well. They have a team GPA of 3.3 and over 48 Academic All-Conference selections in the past four years.
