Oct. 14, 2014 - The Concordia-Chicago volleyball team faced a stiff test this evening as they headed down Division Street to take on the Dominican University Stars. Dominican came into the match undefeated in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (16-8 overall), and CUC had their hands full as the Stars made it 7-0 in the NACC with a three-set victory (25-11, 25-12, 25-7).
The Cougars held their own in the opening minutes of set one but, with the score 5-4 DU, the Stars' Carri Chambers recorded a kill and then served up 10 consecutive points before Allison Back's (LaPorte, IN/Marquette Catholic) kill ended the run. Caitlen Foote had a strong set with five kills in 11 chances as the home team hit .371 en route to an opening 25-11 win. The Stars' powerful attack did not let up in set two as they hit .500 with 13 kills. Their serving also recorded four aces as they built up a big lead. Kaylyn Anderson (East Chicago, IN/Whiting) made the most of her opportunities for CUC, knocking down four kills in five tries, but it was not enough as the hosts took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-12 win. Set three saw Dominican jump out to a 5-0 lead before CUC managed a sideout. The Stars' lead grew to 10-3 and 19-5 as they pulled away to finish the sweep.
Anderson was limited to seven kills in 19 attempts, and the Cougars were credited with just 15 kills for the match. By contrast, Dominican ripped 45 kills in 82 tries with just seven miscues for a .463 attack percentage. The Stars also managed 12 serving aces, led by Chambers' five.
Concordia-Chicago (5-18, 2-5 NACC) returns to action this weekend when they travel to Wisconsin to play Marian University and Lakeland College.
