Falcons Fly Past Cougars in Rematch of Women's Season Opener

Jan. 8, 2014 - The Concordia-Chicago Cougar women's basketball team faced their first rematch of the season this evening when they engaged Concordia Wisconsin in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play. The Nov. 19 contest in River Forest resulted in a tense, hard-fought three-point game. The rematch in Mequon was far different as the CUW Falcons completed the season sweep with a 71-36 win over the Cougars.
The Falcons got going early as two baskets by Katie Luethe ignited an early 8-0 run that gave the hosts a 10-2 lead. Baskets by April Broska (Belleville, MI/Lutheran South) and Morgan Jahnke (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community) kept the Cougars close until the Falcons ran off another string of eight unanswered points. The hosts' lead reached 20 points at the 8:40 mark of the half, and they would roll on to a lead of 39-17 at the half.
The road got no easier for the Cougars in the second half, The Falcons scored the first 10 points coming out of the break. Much of the final part of the game saw both coaches use their benches liberally with all of the Cougars seeing action.
Kassy Koehler (Belvidere, IL - Rockford Lutheran) and Lauren Orr (O'Fallon, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) each scored seven points for the Cougars, Orr's total coming on 3-3 from the field including a three-pointer.
Luethe led the Falcons (11-1, 8-1 NACC) with a 14-point, 10-rebound effort. Tori Riechers followed with 12 points (5-9 from the field).
The Cougars (0-12, 0-9 NACC) will play their seventh straight road game this Saturday at Edgewood College before returning home for a pair of games at Geiseman Gymnasium next week.
