Jan. 21, 2014 - This evening in Milwaukee, the Concordia-Chicago women's basketball team ran up against another team that is chasing one of the top spots in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference standings. The Inferno of Alverno College used a fast start to take control of the game early and carry on to a 75-33 victory over the Cougars.
The Cougars began the game with an uptempo attack but could not easily penetrate the Inferno's interior defense. April Broska (Belleville, MI/Lutheran South) got the Cougars on the board with a layup that made the score 4-2, but the Inferno scored the next 17 points over a 6 1/2-minute span. Jamie Hoernke scored 10 of her 12 first-half points during the run to account for much of her damage.
Angelik Young (Crete, IL/Crete-Monee) scored on a short jumper to end the run, and Kassy Koehler (Belvidere, IL/Rockford Lutheran) and Lauren Orr (O'Fallon, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) hit back-to-back threes later in the half to bring the Cougars back within 14. However, Alverno finished the half with a 9-2 run and took a 35-14 lead into the halftime break.
Concordia-Chicago had a better start offensively to the second half as Young scored twice inside and Morgan Jahnke (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community) was on target with a long three. However, an 8-0 run by Alverno took the lead over 30 and effectively sealed the victory for the home team.
The final stats showed Concordia shooting 13-51 while Alverno made 27 of 65 shots. The Inferno won the battle on the boards 48-33, and the turnovers showed CUC with 27 while Alverno was guilty of 14.
Broska finished with nine points to lead the Cougars, and Young reached double figures on the boards with 10. Jamie Hoernke put up a double-double for Alverno with 23 points and 11 rebounds while Ashley Berry and Devon Gorman scored 14 each.
The Cougars will next compete at the 63rd annual Concordia Invitational Tournament this weekend. CUC's first game will come on Friday at 1:00 when they take on Concordia University Ann Arbor.
