March 14, 2013 - The 2013 Cougar football team experienced a different kind of spring break this year. A group of 13 players and coaches donated their time as workers at Camp Awana.
Founded in 1946, Camp Awana is located about 35 miles north of Milwaukee in Fredonia, Wisconsin. Over the years, many groups have used the grounds for a retreat, from church youth groups and family ministries to Boy and Girl Scout troops, athletic teams and community organizations (source, www.campawana.org).
The members of the football team spent the daylight hours helping repair the camp's cabins by painting, replacing floors, moving furniture, splitting wood and performing a variety of other jobs that helped the caretakers of the camp get ready for this season's campers. At night, the football volunteers enjoyed a variety of activities including Bible studies, sledding, basketball, volleyball and floor hockey games.
The group was led by Concordia head football coach Randy Awrey and team chaplain Bill Stevenson '76. Team members included Nick Awrey (Saginaw, MI/Novel Catholic Central), Mike Bailey (Spring Hill, FL/Central), Marcus Frazier (Chicago, IL/Evergreen Park), Robert Heiss (Rochester Hills, MI/Lutheran Northwest), Kevin Hagens (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran North), Scott Illich (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake Central), Ryan Lehner (Bloomington, IL/University), C.J. Pasley (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran North), Will Schuld (Chicago, IL/Walther Lutheran), Adam Suszka (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) and Pat Ugolini (Seneca, IL/H.S.).
