Cougar Women Chilled in Desert Air

Dec. 30, 2013 - The Concordia-Chicago women's basketball team will embrace hopes for a better 2014 after the final game of the 2013 portion of the schedule resulted in similar fashion to the previous nine. In day two of the Scottsdale (AZ) Shootout, the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes used a 23-2 run in the first half to take control and charge to a 72-40 win over the Cougars.

The Lutes took an early 6-0 lead before Hannah Rummel (Fenton, MI/Lake Fenton) scored inside at the 18:23 mark to put the Cougars on the board. But Sarah Barnes' three triggered PLU's gigantic run over the next six minutes, a run which the Lutes capped with three consecutive treys. The Californians would lead by as much as 29 points before Jessica Genke's (Kiel, WI/H.S.) basket and Rummel's three ended the half with the Cougars trailing 42-18.

The Cougars would be unable to mount a significant rally in the second half. as they managed just 38 percent shooting from the field. The Lutes shot 41 percent for the half and 45 percent for the game. However, the bigger issue for CUC was rebounding. The Lutes collected 44 rebounds to the Cougars' 29; Katelyn Smith grabbed eight for the Lutes while Genke's 10 led the Cougars.

Genke scored 11 points and added four steals to pace the Cougars. Angelik Young (Crete, IL/Crete-Monee) shot 5-8 from the field to finish with 10 points.

Concordia-Chicago (0-10) will return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play Saturday afternoon when they travel to Wisconsin and play the Milwaukee School of Engineering at the Kern Center.
