Oct. 19, 2013 – Following a close five sets in Friday night's home match against Marian, the second half of the weekend's back-to-back matches got no easier for the Concordia Cougars this afternoon. The opponent was Lakeland College who came into the match with a 6-2 record in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play and fighting to lock up their conference tournament berth. The Muskies made it 7-2 (18-11 overall) with a four-set win over the Cougars by scores of 15-25, 25-13, 25-19 and 25-17.
Concordia celebrated the careers of the three seniors before the game as
Jenna Boggs (South Beloit, IL/Hononegah), Bianca Gordon (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) and
Lisa Koller (Indianapolis, IN/Indianapolis Lutheran) were playing their final game in Geiseman Gym in their Cougar careers.
The Cougars got off to a quick start in dominating the first set as they had a team .346 hitting percentage in the first set. They were led by freshman
Raven Burns (Shorewood, IL/Minooka Community) who won four consecutive points to put the Cougars in a lead they would not relinquish during the first set.
Unfortunately, the first set was the high watermark and the remaining three sets were not as kind to the Cougars. The match turned on a number of service aces by the Muskies jump server Caleigh Galvan who ticked three straight service aces off the net. Brook Aiazzi and Melissa Christiansen also led significant serving streaks as the Muskies finished off the Cougars in three consecutive sets.
Lakeland finished the match with 53 kills and a .191 attack, led by Jenna Ward (16 kills, .500) and Anna Faust (15 kills, .347). Concordia (3-17, 1-8 NACC) was led by
Kristin Allen's (Green Valley, IL/Illini Central) nine kills and Boggs' 33 assists.
The Cougars will play at Aurora University on Wednesday night at 7:00.
