Perkins Leads Cougars in Non-Conference Matchup Against Elmhurst

ELMHURST, ILL. --The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's volleyball team took a short trip to take on the Elmhurst University Bluejays in a mid-week, non-conference matchup, where the Cougars ultimately fell 3-0.

Inside the Box
  • Jessalyne Perkins (Chicago, Ill.) led the Cougars with five kills, three digs, two blocks, and two service aces.
  • Indiah Day (Merrillville, Ind.) also added five kills and one block
  • Rosemary Brenner (Frankenmuth, Mich.) tacked on nine digs on the night while adding ine one assist.

How It Happened
Set One

The Bluejays struck first to open the match, but back to back kills from Brynn Icenogle (Brentwood, Calif.) and Debanhi Moreno (Dallas, Texas) put the Cougars ahead 2-1. The Bluejays went on a 5-0 run early on that would set the Cougars back before Perkins would slam an ace and bring the Cougars within two. Another 5-0 run from the Bluejays would rattle the Cougars before back-to-back errors from Elmhurst would bring Concordia within five.

The Cougars would struggle to string together consecutive points while the Bluejays would score the majority of points in consecutive rallies. CUC would make a push late int he set with a service error from the Bluejays paired with a kill from Day, but ultimately would fall 25-15.

Set Two
The Bluejays would start off the second set with aggression, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before kills from Moreno and Brenner would break through and put points on the board. The Bluejays would keep playing aggressive, jumping out to as much as a four-point lead before either team could break double digits, but the Cougars would cut into the deficit with kills from Day and Icenogle.

The two teams would go back-and-forth the majority of the match before a string of six consecutive points from Elmhurst would end the set with the Cougars trailing 25-14.

Set Three
The Bluejays would start set three in a similar fashion, jumping out to a 5-0 lead yet again before Malainna Adler (Fenton, Mo.) would help the Cougars earn their first points of the set. The teams would trade points yet again, but the Cougars would be unable to overcome the initial deficit. CUC would finally string together a string of points with kills from Perkins and Icenogle and an ace from Perkins.

A Bluejay service error and a service ace from Lariah Marshall (Carbondale, Ill.) would bring the Cougars within two. Elmhurst would go on a 3-0 run before a pair of attack errors would give Concordia the points and bring them back within reach. The two teams would exchange points to close the set, but with the Cougars already trailing they would fall in set three 25-17 and drop the match 3-0.
