Box Score Sept. 12, 2013 – The Concordia University Chicago and Lakeland College women's soccer teams came together for a cancer awareness game highlighted by special jerseys marking the occasion. After the pregame camaraderie, the teams got down to business. The 3-0 result in favor of the Cougars set a new team record with their fifth winning result in a row. The previous record was four wins in a row set in 2011 and 2012.
"It took us some time to settle down to business and play soccer the way we know how," said head coach
Thomas Goines. "But our forwards were dangerous all game with the runs we have practiced."
With Lakeland playing a high offsides line, the first half was turned into a track meet as the Cougars rampaged behind the Muskies backline. In the 15
th minute,
Ahissa Bustos (Island Lake, IL/Wauconda) played a give-and-go with
Natalie Weinhold (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) on the left side, and Bustos ripped a strong left foot shot inside the far post for the opening goal of a game and her second of the season.
Ten minutes later, Weinhold unlocked the Muskies' defense as she sprung
Alyssa Soulis (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake North) for the second goal of the game and Soulis's-NACC leading eleventh goal. The highlight of the half was the standing ovation the team gave freshman
Nikki Anderson (Oswego, IL/H.S.) as she returned to the soccer field for the second time this season after being injured just five minutes into the first game of the season.
The second half of the game showed a renewed commitment to possession by the Cougars as they dominated the field. The Cougars outshot the Muskies 18-2 and had a 9-3 advantage on corner kicks for the game. Late in the second half, Anderson played the ball to
Elizabeth Sanders (St. Louis, MO/Parkway South) who made a great run and hit the back of the net for her fourth goal and Anderson's first assist of the season.
Coach Goines said, "This was a big win for us as we work our way through the heavy schedule. With four games this week, we have tired legs, but we were able to play some quality soccer against an organized opponent."
CUC keeper
Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Rudge) touched the ball twice in earning her sixth clean sheet of the season. The Lakeland keeper made eight saves.
The Cougars will be home on Sunday against Marian in a make-up game from Homecoming weekend. The game is at 12:30 p.m.
