Oct. 11, 2013 - Concordia University Chicago's volleyball team dropped the first of back-to-back weekend contests this evening with a three-set loss (17-25, 12-25, 20-25) to Wisconsin Lutheran College at Geiseman Gymnasium.
The Cougars struggled with their hitting in the first two sets and fell into a big deficit in set two as the visitors scored the first eight points. Wisconsin Lutheran also received a strong performance by Erin Greenfield as she powered nine kills (.350) in the first two sets.
In set three, Concordia played its best stretch of the evening as they sought to avoid the sweep.
Danielle Sisco (Park Ridge, IL/Resurrection) and
Bianca Gordon (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) led the Cougars early in the set as CUC built a 10-5 lead.
The Warriors fought back as Megan Wierzbicki served up four straight points. LAter in the set, Gordon's kill gave Concordia a 17-5 lead, but a 5-0 run by WLC turned the tide for good. A block by Sisco and
Lisa Koller (Indianapolis, IN/Indianapolis Lutheran) gave the Cougars a final gasp at 20-23, but the Warriors scored the next two points to put an end of the match.
Erin Greenfield led all players with 13 kills (.257) while Carly Warner added seven kills in 10 chances for a .700 attack. Gordon paced the Cougars with nine kills.
Jenna Boggs (South Beloit, IL/Hononegah) handed out 17 assists, and
Olivia Friedrichs (San Diego, CA/Clairemont) recorded 15 digs.
The Cougars (3-13, 1-4 NACC) will play the second half of their weekend pair at Edgewood College on Saturday afternoon.
