Jan. 26, 2013 - Coming off of an opening round loss at the Concordia Invitational Tournament to host school Concordia Nebraska, the Cougar women's basketball team looked to fare better in the third-place game against Northern Athletics Conference rival Concordia Wisconsin. Instead, the Cougars fell behind early and were never able to recover as the Falcons rolled to a 72-51 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Krystyna Rickett (Sandusky, MI/H.S.) scored eight of the Cougars' first 15 points and assisted on two other baskets. However, a 7-1 run by the Falcons allowed them to open up a 10-point lead at the 8:06 mark of the half.
A pair of baskets by
Angelik Young (Crete, IL/Crete-Monee) and one by
Jessica Genke (Kiel, WI/H.S.), but the Falcons closed out the half on a 9-2 run and led 37-24 after 20 minutes.
The two teams traded baskets through the early part of the second half.
Chanel Stelmachowicz (Fredonia, WI/Living Word Lutheran) hit a couple of threes witin a short span, giving the Cougars hopes of cutting significantly into the lead. However, the Falcons held off the Cougars behind the play of Katie Luethe and Megan Coenen. Luethe scored 15 of her game-high 22 points in the half, shooting 6-9 including a couple of shots from behind the arc. Coenen muscled inside for a couple of baskets and hit all six of her free throws for a 10-point half. Led by the two forwards, the Falcons extended their lead to 21 with six minutes left and ended any thoughts of a Cougars' comeback.
Rickett led the Cougars with 16 points and six assists, and the senior was named to the All-Tournament team. Genke was next in line with 11 points.
Concordia-Chicago (7-13, 7-5) will now return to conference play where they have won their last five. They will host division leader Wisconsin Lutheran College on Wednesday night.
