Jan. 12, 2013 - The Concordia-Chicago Cougars rolled up their biggest offensive game since December of 2010 with
Jessica Genke's (Kiel, WI/H.S.) career-high 31 points leading the way in an 86-67 rout of Lakeland College this afternoon at Geiseman Gymnasium.
Genke, a junior transfer from Lakeland, had her way against her former teammates for the entire day. The 5'11" forward shot 14-19 from the field and knocked down three of four free throws while also earning a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds.
However, Genke was not a one-woman wrecking crew
. Krystyna Rickett (Sandusky, MI/H.S.) hit for 20 points to go with five rebounds and five assists, and
Kassy Koehler (Belvidere, IL/Rockford Lutheran) drilled five three-pointers as part of a 19-point effort. The trio helped the Cougars to a 49 percent shooting performance (33-67) including 8-24 from three-point range.
Leading 17-15 midway through the first half, the Cougars extended their lead to eight on three-point plays by
April Broska (New Boston, MI/Lutheran South) and Genke. However, the Muskies struck back from long range as Taylor Jandrin and Lexie Greenheck canned threes to lead a 14-4 run and give the visitors a 29-27 lead.
Koehler erased the lead as she hit threes on consecutive trips down the floor. Before the half ended, Broska and
Chanel Stelmachowicz (Fredonia, WI/Living Word Lutheran) connected from behind the arc. Rickett's driving layup beat the buzzer, giving Concordia a 45-36 lead at the break.
Lakeland hung close through the first 10 minutes of the second half behind the play of Becky Mayo. The Muskies' senior forward scored eight of their first 10 points and brought the visitors as close as two points. The Cougars' defense tightened up on Mayo, but Taylor Jandrin nailed two threes, the second pulling Lakeland within 56-54 at the 10:05 mark.
With the pressure increasing, the Cougars fired off a 21-2 run over the next five minutes to ice the game. Koehler scored 11 of the 21 including her third, fourth and fifth threes while Genke added nine points including a three-point play. In the final minutes, Rickett zipped a pass underneath who laid the ball in to go over the 30-point mark before retiring to the bench for the final minutes.
The Cougars controlled the boards by a 43-35 count.
Angelik Young (Crete, IL/Crete-Monee) pulled down seven and
Ariel Duell-Duran (Haiku, HI/Seabury Hall) six to support Genke's dozen. Mayo pulled down 10 boards to go with a team-leading 25 points.
Concordia improved to 5-5 in Northern Athletics Conference play with the win, 5-11 overall. The Cougars will look to extend the winning streak to four on Wednesday night at Rockford College.
