Oct. 12, 2012 - The Concordia women's soccer team continued their push for a spot in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament with a 6-3 win at Maranatha Baptist Bible College this afternoon. The win put the Cougars at 4-6-0 in the NAC (6-7 overall) and within striking distance of Benedictine University (4-4-1) and the Milwaukee School of Engineering (4-5-0) for the last spot.
Maranatha took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on Harmony Lorch's goal, but Concordia evened it up four minutes later.
Lilly Poor (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington North) set up
Alyssa Soulis (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake North) for Soulis' seventh of the year.
Freshman
Hillary Campbell (Dyer, IN/Lake Central) reclaimed the team lead in goals in the 23rd minute when she tallied her eighth of the year. The goal was unassisted and gave the Cougars the lead at 2-1.
Shawna Rembold (Rochester, MI/Stoney Creek) scored her first collegiate goal in Tuesday's win over Rockford, and the freshman did not wait long in notching her second. Rembold scored unassisted in the 42nd minute, and the Cougars went into the halftime break with a 3-1 lead.
The intermission did not slow down the Cougars' offense. Campbell made it a three-goal lead just two minutes into the second half as she converted a pass from Soulis.
Lorch tallied her second of the game in the 55th minute to bring the hosts within 4-2, but Concordia had an answer once again within minutes. This time, Soulis did the honors with Rembold earning the assist, and the Cougars had their three-goal lead back.
Campbell finished off her second consecutive hat trick in the 65th minute off of Soulis' second assist of the day. With her tenth goal, Campbell became the first CUC player since Cheyenne Martinez-Trevino in 2009 to scored double-digit goals in her freshman season.
Maranatha's Taylor Thompson finished the scoring with a 72nd minute tally. However, the Cougars' defense stiffened and did not allow the Crusaders a shot over the final 18 minutes. Concordia finished with a 23-8 advantage in
shots with
Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) making three saves in recording the victory.
Concordia will take one final break from the conference schedule this Sunday when they host Ripon College at 1:00.
