Box Score Cougar Men Stymied by Dubuque
Sept. 4, 2011 - The Concordia men's soccer team's bid for their first 2-0 start in 11 seasons was thwarted this afternoon by the University of Dubuque. The Spartans got two goals from Pablo Martinez in blanking the Cougars 3-0 on an otherwise beautiful sunny afternoon in River Forest.
The Spartans outshot the Cougars 15-0 in the first half and got the only goal they needed in the 10th minute. Martinez got free on the right side and shot from eight yards out. Cougar keeper John Gehm (Frankenmuth, MI/H.S.) parried the shot, but the ball came directly back to Martinez. The Spartans' striker made no mistake the second time, blasting the ball high over Gehm's shoulder for a 1-0 lead.
Concordia's deficit became 2-0 in the 30th minute. A mad scramble in front of the goal saw Jacob Hurd score on a tap-in when the Cougars were unable to clear the loose ball.
The Cougars had a little more success pushing the ball forward in the second half. Ben Klingberg (LaGRange Park, IL/Lyons Township) was credited with Concordia's first shot, a 30-yarder that was handled by UD's Nicholas Kasper. One minute later, however, the Spartans capitalized on some quick, deft passing by Nick McDonald and Jack Stefanski to set up Martinez on a 15-yard blast for the final tally of the day.
Andre Baker (Elmhurst, IL/York Community) collected the Cougars' final two shots, one on a low blast from the right wing that forced Kasper to make the save.
The Cougars (1-1) return to action under the lights Wednesday night when they play at North Park University.
