Storms Force Cougar Football Opener to Premature Halt

Sept. 3, 2011 - What started out as a high-octane, offense-dominated football game between the Concordia Cougars and Lake Forest Foresters on Saturday afternoon was marred by an unwelcome interruption. Flashes of lightning followed by a torrential rain forced the teams off the field at the 7:20 mark of the second quarter. Following a delay of 90 minutes and a conversation between the officials, coaches and game administrators, the remainder of the game was suspended. The two institutions are examining the possibility of resuming the game at the end of the regular season dependent on scheduling and other issues. If the game is not resumed, it will go into the books as a "no contest."
Prior to the bad weather, the Cougars and Foresters combined for 54 points and 547 yards of offense with Lake Forest holding a 28-26 lead. Concordia quarterback Jake Koehler (Belvidere, IL/Rockford Lutheran), making his first start behind center, rushed for 101 yards on 11 carries including a touchdown run of 15 yards. Koehler also threw touchdown passes of six yards to Savonte Hunt (Archer, FL/Buchholz), 13 yards to Jamal Thomas (Weirsdale, FL/Lake Weir) and 18 yards to Terrence Miller (Jacksonville, FL/Potter's House Academy).

The Cougars will host the University of Chicago Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1:30 p.m. It will be Hall of Fame Day at Concordia with the class of inductees including Cougar head coach Lonnie Pries.
