Sept. 21, 2011 - The Cougar volleyball team won its second straight Northern Athletics Conference match this evening with a four-set win (25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21) over Rockford College at Geiseman Gymnasium. The win improved Concordia's record to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in NAC competition.
Concordia had the better hitting attack for the evening, but they found it difficult to put away a pesky Rockford team. What ultimately tipped the scales in the Cougars' favor was the play at the net. Concordia recorded 14 points through blocks on the strength of three solo blocks and 22 block assists. Sophomore Bianca Gordon (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) led the potent net play with one solo and seven assists. Allison Sapiro (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) and Rachel Cooper (Roscoe, IL/Hononegah) each chipped in with one solo and four assists.
Senior Sarah Potter (New Haven, IN/Woodlan) notched her third consecutive double-double with a team-leading 15 kills and 12 digs. Claire Mackey (Shelton, NE/Heartland Lutheran) added 12 kills, nine over the final two sets, while contributing a team-high 14 digs. Sapiro and Gordon, the Cougars' two middles, combined for 15 kills and a .414 attack.
The Cougars will play four matches this weekend at the Wheaton College Tournament. Friday's schedule has Concordia playing St. Norbert College at 4:30 and Aurora University at 6:30.
