Cougars Roar Back to Beat Aurora, Even NAC Record
Sept. 15, 2011 - The Concordia-Chicago volleyball team survived a determined early effort by host Aurora University to beat the Spartans in four sets (20-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-23). The win put the Cougars at 1-1 in Northern Athletics Conference play, 4-6 overall.
Aurora played their home opener on this evening, and they came out firing on all cylinders. Concordia was set back on their heels, hitting for a minus-.029 in the first set. However, the Cougars pulled it together before the second set, and the result was a reversal of roles; Aurora hit for a negative percentage while Concordia improved its accuracy with just two attack errors. The 12-point win not only evened the match at 1-1 but also firmly established momentum on the Cougars' side for the remainder of the match.
Set three saw the Cougars riddle the hosts' defense with 13 kills and a .290 attack, and the Spartans' errors would catch up to them in set four as Concordia wrapped up a nice road victory.
Sarah Potter (New Haven, IN/Woodlan) led Concordia with 12 kills and 11 digs. Bianca Gordon (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) recorded nine kills in 14 errorless attempts for an outstanding .643 attack. The offense ran off the two-setter attack with efficiency as Jenna Boggs (South Beloit, IL/Hononegah) handed out 16 assists and Savanna Ashbaugh (Waverly, IL/H.S.) added 14.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 21 when they host NAC rival Rockford
