Second-Half Dry Spell Costly to Cougar Women

Dec. 3, 2011 - The Concordia Cougars looked to bounce back from a double-overtime loss Wednesday night with this afternoon's home game against Edgewood College. The Cougars and Eagles battled at close quarters for almost three-quarters of the game, but an 11-0 run by the visitors made the difference in Edgewood's 53-46 victory.
April Broska (New Boston, MI/Lutheran South) shot the Cougars to a quick 5-0 lead, but Concordia's scoring ran dry just as quickly. Edgewood scored eight straight points over the next six minutes before two free throws by Krystyna Rickett (Sandusky, MI/H.S.) ended the Eagles' run.
Trailing 16-10, Kassy Koehler's (Belvidere, IL/Rockford Lutheran) three brought the Cougars back as they reeled off seven straight points to take the lead. The Cougars eventually extended the lead to three, but baskets by Edgewood's Dareon Henderson and Allison Tobin closed the half to make the score 25-24 Eagles at halftime.
The Cougars opened the second half with an 8-1 outburst, sparked by five points from Koehler. However, the six-point lead disappeared over the next few minutes. Melanie Walker's three triggered a 9-1 run, and Edgewood reclaimed the lead at 35-33 with 13 minutes left.
Rickett's jumper tied the game again, but her basket would be Concordia's final one for a while. The Cougars missed their next eight shots from the field and also committed three turnovers during the five-minute span. By the time that Broska's layup put the Cougars on the board again, the Eagles had run off 11 straight points to take command.
Concordia closed within six at 48-42 and again at 50-44, but their shooting troubles would not allow them to make a sustained run. The Cougars missed seven of their final nine shots, and the Eagles got a clutch basket by Marian Hill with a minute left to seal the victory.
Hill led Edgewood with 15 points including 4-8 shooting from three-point range. Tobin followed with 11 points and seven rebounds, and Walker added 10 points and six boards.
Broska shot 7-11 from the field on the way to a game-high 18 points, The sophomore also captured seven rebounds and made three steals in her 35 minutes of play. Koehler also reached double figures with 10 points.
Concordia (1-5, 0-3) will host Benedictine University on Tuesday night before hitting the road for four straight games
