Cougar Women Find the Going Rough in Rockford

Jan. 25, 2011 - The Concordia Cougar women's basketball team dropped their third straight game this evening, falling to Rockford College by a score of 63-50.

The Cougars fell behind 12-2 before threes by April Broska (New Boston, MI/Lutheran South) and Krystyna Rickett (Sandusky, MI/H.S.) provided a spark. However, the Regents controlled the inside and were able to maintain their lead behind the play of sisters Megan and Nicole Lawler (nine points each).

Later in the half, three baskets by Marche Smith (Oak Park, IL/Trinity) put the Cougars back into the chase. Maja Despot (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard South) scored on an inside move, and Rickett followed with a three. Smith's layup put Concordia within one at 31-30, but Rockford scored the final seven points of the half to put the hosts up by eight at the break.

Rockford had 14-26 accuracy from the field for the half while Concordia was 11 of 27. However, the Regents' bigger advantage came on the glass where they pulled down 20 to the Cougars' 10.

Cocnordia's attempts to come back in the second half were denied by a physical Rockford defense that held the Cougars to 8-34 shooting. Despite the physical play, the Cougars made just four trips to the foul line in the second half and nine for the game. For the game, Concordia shot 19-61 (31 percent) overall, 5-19 (26 percent) from three-point range. Smith finished with 23 points and eight rebounds while Rickett was next in the scoring line with 11 points.

Rockford shot 21-48 (44 percent) from the field, 4-10 from three-point range and 17-26 (65 percent) from the free throw line. The Regents were led by Nicole Lawler with 18 points (4-10 FG, 10-12 FT) and Megan Lawler with 14 points (5-5 FG, 4-6 FT) and 10 rebounds. Rockford doubled up Concordia in rebounds 48-24 but committed 25 turnovers to Concordia's 13.

The Cougars (7-10, 4-8 NAC) will travel to Ann Arbor for the 60th annual CIT this weekend. First up for the Cougars is Concordia Nebraska at 1:00 EST (noon Chicago time) on Friday.
