Rhyen Staley

Rhyen Staley was appointed the first ever head coach of the Concordia-Chicago Men's Volleyball program in November of 2017.

Staley comes to Concordia-Chicago from Joliet Catholic Academy, where he has coached the boys' volleyball program since 2007. In that time, he has coached the Hilltoppers to a .600 winning percentage and led the 2015 team to the program's first-ever conference title. Staley developed 22 all-conference players, including current Ball State University player Blake Reardon, who is the Illinois High School Association's all-time leader in career kills with 1,552. Staley has also assisted with the girls' program at JCA from 2012 to 2016, which included back-to-back runner-up finishes in Class 3A for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

A native of Joliet, IL, Staley's first taste of college coaching came at his alma mater of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne in 2004 as an assistant men's coach and recruiting coordinator. Later collegiate experiences included two years as an associate head men's coach at Quincy University in Quincy, IL, and one year as the second assistant women's volleyball coach at the University of Albany (NY). In addition, Staley can count numerous opportunities at coaching club volleyball and officiating as building a deeper love and greater understanding of the game.

Staley also credits being able to learn from some of the best minds in the game. During his year in Albany, the head coach was Kelly Sheffield, currently the head coach for the women's program at the University of Wisconsin. Other mentors include Ron Larsen, two-time assistant coach for the USA Olympics men's volleyball team and part of the gold medal-winning team of 2008; Arnie Ball, AVCA Hall of Famer who started the IPFW program; and Niels Pedersen, former head coach at Quincy University, Loyola University and the University of Wisconsin.

Staley earned his B.A. in general studies with minors in U.S. history, English and anthropology from IU-PU Fort Wayne in 2003. He earned his Master's degree in elementary education from Lewis University in 2008.
