Troy Campbell became head coach of the Concordia-Chicago Volleyball program in the spring of 2014.
The Cougar Volleyball team has improved under Campbell’s direction. His program went 18-15 in 2017, the most wins for the program since the 2008 season. His team then took another step forward in 2018, clinching a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2009.
Campbell has coached five all-conference players during his tenure. Most recently, Shannon Stamp was named second team All-NACC in 2019. Jaylynn Johnson and Stamp were named first team All-NACC in 2018. Nikki Crowley and Austin Thompson were second team All-NACC selections in 2017 and 2015 respectively. Crowley flourished under Campbell’s direction. Crowley became just the second player in program history to record 3000 or more assists.
Campbell came to CUC in 2014 with 19 years of coaching experience at the high school and club level. Most prominently, he coached at Marquette Catholic High School in Michigan City, Indiana. He coached the team to a runner-up in the state championship in 2003, his first season, before leading the program to six consecutive Indiana State Championships from 2004 to 2009. Campbell was recognized by his peers in 2009 with both the AirCat National Coach of the Year and the Indiana State Coach of the Year; previously, he was named the Indiana (North) Coach of the Year in 2005. The Michigan City News Dispatch named him the Area Coach of the Year every year between 2003 and 2009, and again in 2013. He coached and selected the Indiana All-Star team for seven straight seasons (2003-09) and the South Bend Sports Fest All-Star tournament in both 2006 and 2008.
Since 1996, Campbell has also coached at the club level with the Dunes Volleyball Club. Working with ages 13-18, he has coached multiple teams to AAU and USA national appearances.
Campbell was a standout player for Westville (IN) High School and earned Most Valuable Player honors in the State Championship in 1991 and 1992. Recognized as one of the top 50 volleyball players in the nation by Volleyball Magazine in 1993, he received a scholarship to play at Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne. Campbell returned to Westville in 1995 to begin his coaching career as both girls' and boys' varsity coach. He has also served as an assistant varsity coach at LaPorte High School (1997-99) and a varsity coach at New Buffalo High School (1999). Most recently, Campbell coached at New Prairie High School during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
Since his arrival at Concordia-Chicago, Campbell and his players have worked hard to solidify the concept of family prevalent throughout the university. "I expect our team to be a family and a support system for each other," says Campbell. "There are many aspects of college life, and we will give our student-athletes the best possible experience in every one of those areas. Concordia University Chicago is a special place, and I want our student-athletes to be as proud as I am to be a part of it.
