Howard Carley became head coach for women’s and men’s tennis at Concordia University Chicago. in the fall of 2016.
Carley brings to Concordia-Chicago a rich background of tennis coaching experience. He began his coaching career at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, IL in 1972 where he directed both the boys’ and girls’ teams. Carley had the distinction of coaching Andrea and Suzi Jaeger to state championships; both sisters went on to enjoy professional careers. While at Stevenson, Carley also coached two boys to the state semi-finals and led both the girls’ and boys’ teams to conference championships.
Also at the prep level, Carley has coached a combined 18 years in the Chicagoland area at Jacobs, Buffalo Grove and the Latin School. Since 2013, Carley has served as the tennis coordinator at 16 McFetridge Sports Center in Chicago. His responsibilities included managing United States Tennis Association programs and tournaments, and managing day-to-day operations.
With Carley coaching at the collegiate level for the first time, recruiting will be a new responsibility. However, Carley states that it is one of the areas of his new position about which he is the most excited, owing to the numerous connections he has built with high school tennis coaches over the years. Along with his initial excitement about the University itself, of which the former high school English teacher says, “I believe that Concordia has a lot to offer people,” Carley is confident in his ability to build the rosters of both the men’s and women’s programs. He is a USPTA and PTR certified professional.
Carley earned his BA in English from Metropolitan State University in Denver, CO and his MA in English from DePaul University in Chicago, IL.
