Jose Mercado returned to CUC as an assistant baseball coach in the fall of 2022.

Mercado returns to coaching after spending the summer playing professional baseball in the Frontier League with the Empire State Greys and the Lake Erie Crushers.

Mercado’s professional career began in 2021 in the American Association with the Gary Railcats. Mercado appeared in 43 games that season, finishing with a .259 batting average and seven stolen bases.

Mercado re-wrote many records during his time as a player at Concordia University Chicago. The quick-handed shortstop started in 102 games at CUC between the 2018-19 seasons. He batted .367 during his time at CUC, with 116 runs scored, 32 extra-base hits, 55 runs driven in, and 85 stolen bases. The 85 stolen bases are the most in school history. Mercado was thrown out just 11 times trying to steal a base in his CUC career.

Mercado was part of the historic 2018 team that went 40-15 and finished just one win away from the NCAA World Series Championship series. He was also part of the 2019 team that finished 42-10 and hosted the first-ever NCAA Regional and Super Regional on the Concordia University Chicago campus.
