RIVER FOREST, Ill. – On a scorching day at Concordia Stadium, Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team opened the season against University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW) Warhawks. The Cougars showed grit but ultimately fell 4-0.
Inside the Box
- Izzy Fairless (Royal Oak, Mich.) took the Cougars' lone shot.
- Katelyn Wagner (Lagrange, Ky.) played the full 90 minutes net, collecting a career-high 14 saves.
First Half
- Within the first two minutes, Wagner was forced to make an outstretched save that resulted in a corner for the Warhawks. Wagner had to make back-to-back saves before the Cougars were able to clear the ball out of the box.
- In the 19th minute, Fairless shot the ball low and hard but was saved by the Warhawks' goalkeeper.
- On the counterattack, UWW would put their first goal in the back of the net.
- Just two minutes later, the Warhawks would double their lead.
- The Cougars remained on the defensive, making key tackles and winning fifty-fifty balls to keep the Warhawks at bay.
- Wagner continued to make saves, including denying UWW just before the whistle blew to signal halftime.
Second Half
- Once again, Wagner was tested early, but she remained calm and collected, keeping the damage minimal.
- CUC made multiple runs up the field, but the Warhawks spoiled the Cougars' chances.
- In the 81st minute, the Warhawks scored back-to-back goals to go up 4-0.
- Wagner recorded two more saves while the Cougars' defense would block a few more shots from the Warhawks to finish the game. UWW took the game, 4-0.
