Cougars Battle, but Foresters Take the Sweep

Lake Forest, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's volleyball team made their way to Lake Forest for a midweek matchup against the Foresters of Lake Forest College. After some well-fought sets, the Foresters ultimately swept the Cougars 3-0.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Indiah Day (Merrillville, Ind.) led the night's match with eight kills and 27 total attacks, along with an assist, an ace and 10 digs.

  • Debanhi Moreno (Dallas, Texas) followed up with eight kills and 30 total attacks, alongside a dig.

  • Brynn Icenogle (Brentwood, Calif.) ended the night's match with three kills and 16 total attacks, also contributing a block and two digs.

Here's What Happened

Set One

The match opened up with a strong kill from Moreno for the Cougars' first point. The team exchanged points, but the Foresters took on a slight lead early on. Day took her place on the court, sending over some great kills; the Foresters built up a four-point lead. Day and Moreno continued to send over kills, but couldn't get the Cougars over the advantage the Foresters had. The Foresters left the Cougars in a six-point deficit, surpassing 20. An attack from the Foresters had put them first in line for set point. Another kill would seal the set; the Forest took set one at 25-17. Both teams moved into the second set, the Foresters leading 1-0.

Set Two

The Cougars tacked on the first point of the set with a kill from Lydianis Boutureira (Chicago, Ill.). An attack error and a kill from Icenogle had put the Cougars in the lead. The Cougars took advantage of the Foresters' errors, coming into a six-point lead. Day and Harmonie Cooper (Chicago, Ill.) had put up amazing blocks, smacking down an attempted attack from a Forester. The Foresters tried eating away at their opponent's lead, but the Cougars kept them at a distance, attacks from Day and Moreno serving as a barrier. The Foresters eventually caught up to the Cougars, tying 22-22. The Foresters delivered kills, too strong for the Cougars to deflect. The Foresters took the second set at 25-23; the teams transitioned into the third set, the Foresters remaining in the lead 2-0.

Set Three

Boutureira started off the set once more with a kill. The effort of this kill was in vain as the Foresters grabbed the lead quickly. The Cougars fell into a seven-point deficit, struggling to hold onto the set. The Foresters lead hit double digits, forcing the Cougars to take a timeout and reevaluate. The Cougars began to retaliate against the Foresters' 10-point lead, kills from Day and Neva Foster (Parker, Colo.), along with a service ace from Rosemary Brenner (Frankenmuth, Mich.) chipped away at some points. The Foresters reached set point and inevitably took the third and final set of the night at 25-18, sweeping the Cougars 3-0.
