Hornets Sting Cougars with Loss

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team welcomed the Hornets of Kalamazoo College to Concordia Stadium this afternoon. The Cougars played strong defensively, but once the Hornets scored one, the goals kept coming and the Cougars fell 4-0.

  • Gonzales remained a brick wall for the Cougars, making four saves in the next 20 minutes.
  • The backline of Chloe Homfeldt (Spokane, Wash.), Lorenza Mendoza (Murrieta, Calif.), and Alexandra Rodriguez (Lakewood, Calif.) mitigated Kalamzoo's offensive attacks, keeping the Hornets from a clear shot.
  • In the 41st minute, off a corner kick, one of Kalamazoo's players took a hard shot that a CUC defender was able to get in front of and block from going in the net. Unfortunately, the ball fell into the path of another Hornet and Kalamzoo to the lead, 1-0.
  • Gonzales made one more save just before halftime.

Second Half
  • CUC was the first to get into the attacking third. Just two minutes into the half, N. Flores created an opportunity for herself, but she was denied by the Hornets' goalkeeper.
  • Back on the other end, the Cougars fended off multiple Hornet attacks in which Gonzales recorded two more saves.
  • In the 64th minute, Kalamazoo doubled its lead.
  • The Cougars' defense never gave up, hindering the Hornets' ability to do any more damage.
  • Kalamazoo's persistence paid off with two goals in the 79th and 83rd minute.
  • N. Flores and Mia Hirayama (Mililani, Hawaii) each had an opportunity just before the final whistle, but it wasn't meant to be. CUC fell 4-0.
