Home Sweet Home, Cougars Take Victory Over Pioneers

RIVER FOREST, ILL.- Making their home debut of the season, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars (CUC) football team showcased a dominating opening show against Grinnell College Pioneers (GC), the Cougars ended the game with a final score of 42-7. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Colton Bosch (Coopersville, Mich.) powered the Cougars on the offensive end with 11 completed passes for a total of 196 yards with one interception. He finished with three passing touchdowns contributing to the Cougars offense. 
  • Phoenyx Clark (South Bend, Ind.) made his mark on the ground, totaling 70 rushing yards and breaking free for a 28 yard touchdown, his first collegiate touchdown. 
  • Dominick Jolley (South Bend, Ind.) wasted no time making an impact, punching in the first touchdown of the game on a 15 yard diving rush to ignite the Cougars offense. The score also marked the first collegiate touchdown of his career. 
  • Joron Brown (St.Joseph, Mich.) continued to fuel the offense, marching his way into the endzone on a three yard touchdown run while finishing with 62 rushing yards. 
  • Korey Randle (East Moline, Ill.) delivered one of the games biggest receptions, exploding for an 88 yard touchdown on his way to a team leading 122 yards. 
  • Wesley Jackson (Robinson, Ill.)  added another spark to the offense, racking up 44 yards and finding the end zone for a touchdown. 
  • Kevon Lawson (Pompano Beach, Fla.) rushed up the middle of the defense for a five yard touchdown. 
  • Kadin Stroer (Warrenton, Mo.) anchored the Cougar defense with a team high 12 total tackles, including two solo stops, making his presence felt. 
  • Adam Lambaz (Elgin, Ill.) fired up the defense with an interception and recorded half a sack. Brandon Shipp (Bolingbrook, Ill.) joined him in the backfield, earning the other half of the sack. 
  • Cayden Brown (Kalamazoo, Mich.) went six-for-six successful kick attempts, adding six points to the board. 
 
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED: 
FIRST QUARTER 
The Cougars won the toss and deferred to the second half. The Pioneers opened the game with possession, but the Cougars defense immediately made their presence felt, forcing a punt after a big defensive play by Hagan Wascher (Frankenmuth, Mich.). With immediate energy from, Bosch connected with Jackson for a 16 yard completion, moving the chains and giving the Cougars an early first down. The drive came to an end shortly after Bosch was sacked, forcing the Cougars to punt. Back on offense, the Cougars quickly found their rhythm. Bosch connected with Lawson for a seven yard gain before Brown added six yards on the ground. After another big time gain, Bosch then kept the ball himself for nine yards. The Cougars continued to attack as Bosch found Jayden Taylor (Southfield, Mich.) for an 11 yard completion and another first down. Following a CUC penalty, Bosch found Jolley, who powered up the middle for a 15 yard diving rush for the end zone, putting the Cougars on the board. The score gave the Cougars an early 7-0 lead.The Cougars defense continued shutting down the Pioneers and giving the offense another opportunity. Randle then broke loose for a 35 yard completion from Bosch, followed by a 10 yard gain from Brown to end the quarter. The Cougars carried a 7-0 lead into the end of the first quarter. 
 

SECOND QUARTER
The Cougars came out firing to open the second quarter. Bosch connected on a 13 yard touchdown pass up the middle by Jackson, extending the Cougars advantage to 14-0. Both teams traded possessions, but neither offense was able to convert on their drives. After being forced to punt, the Cougars would recover a muffed reception and regain the ball on their own 37 yard line, but a tipped pass would fall into the hands of the Pioneers. The Cougars amped up the offense with Bosch finding Randle for a short pass and would break away for an explosive 88 yard touchdown, sending the Cougars further ahead. The Pioneers' struggles continued as they muffed the kick return, giving the Cougars possession. Bosch took advantage of the opportunity, finding Lawson on a five yard touchdown pass up the middle to push the lead to 28-0. Trying to spark something on the offense, the Pioneers attempted to move the ball through the air, but Wascher would get a hand on the ball and Lambaz stepped up to collect the interception for the Cougars. Both teams struggled to score on their final drives of the quarter, but the Cougars maintained with a lead of 28-0 at halftime. 
 
 
THIRD QUARTER
Both teams opened the third quarter with drives that failed to find the endzone. The Pioneers would have their most promising opportunity yet, moving all the way down to the two yard line before three consecutive stops with tackles from Zack Puracchio (), Jordan Lacey (), Devean Shearer (), Luther Tyrell (), Stroer, and Shipp. The Cougars then turned to Clark at quarterback, where he immediately made an impact, breaking loose for a 23 yard rush on his first snap. The Cougars continued to move into the Pioneers territory, adding another 15 yards to keep the offense moving. Bosch returned to the game and connected with Jackson for a 15 yard completion up the middle and another Cougar first down. The Cougars continued to control the game as Brown combined for four rushing yards to close up the quarter. The Cougars ended with a 28-0 lead into the fourth quarter. 
 
 
FOURTH QUARTER
The Cougars wasted no time adding to their lead in the final quarter. After inching closer to the endzone with a pass interference call in favor of the Cougars, Brown rushed up the middle for a three yard touchdown to extend their lead out to 35-0. The Cougars defense once again came through with a crucial stop, turning the ball back over to fiery Cougar offense. Clark returned as quarterback and got to working, taking off with a 28 yard gain to move the Cougars down the field. Following a fumble, Clark connected with Taylor for a ten yard reception. After another quick eight yard gain, Clark delivered again, charging ahead for a 21 yard touchdown to put the Cougars ahead 42-0. With less than three minutes remaining, the Pioneers finally broke through with a 17 yard touchdown, putting them on the scoreboard with a score of 42-7. The Cougars closed the game by taking a knee, securing a dominant 42-7 victory over the Pioneers.
