Southern and Campos Lead Cougars to Doubleheader Sweep

River Forest, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars softball team were back at home to welcome the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran College for a weekend doubleheader. In game one, the Warriors quickly took the lead, but the perseverance of the Cougars' offense turned the tables and gave the Cougars game one, 5-4. In game two, the Cougars kept up their momentum and proceeded to take game two, 2-0, sweeping the afternoon's matchup.

Game One

Inside the Box Score:

  • Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill) went three for four at the plate in game one, tacking on two RBIs for the Cougars.
  • Alyssa Campos (Eastvale, Calif.) went two for three at the plate in game one, grabbing two runs and one RBI.
  • Mayah Larenas (Chino, Calif.) went one for two at the plate in game one.
  • Eden Pufahl (Laguna Hills, Calif.) got a win in the circle with two innings pitched and seven batters faced.

Here's What Happened

  • The first inning started with a bang as runners made it to first before a Warrior hit a home run into right center field, tacking two Warrior runs onto the board. The Cougars would then go behind the bats, starting with Haley Gulsby (Englewood, Fla.) getting walked. The Warriors took their Cougar outs quickly, ending the inning in the lead, 2-0.
  • The Cougars retaliated against the Warriors' runs, grabbing their outs fast. The Cougars would start having more success at the plate as Campos hit a double to right field. This was followed up with McKyler Morris (Belvidere, Ill.) reaching first off of an error by the pitcher, letting Campos advance to third. An out from Alaina Pilas (Chicago, Ill.) would help get Morris to second, but a final out from Eliza Auger (Littleton, Colo.) would end the inning.
  • The third inning would open up with a Warrior getting walked; the Warriors would get as far as third before a Warrior was caught trying to steal a base - the distraction leading to another Warrior making it to home, scoring another run for their team. As the Cougars came in from the field, they got to swinging as Southern singled to shortstop. Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.) would then reach first off of a fielder's choice, Southern being the selected out. The bottom of the inning closed out, the Warriors extending their lead, 3-0
  • The Cougars' luck started to spark as the fourth inning rolled around, a Warrior being walked before the top of the inning closed up with easy outs. The Cougars began their ascent with a home run into left field from Campos, tacking on the first Cougar run. Larenas would then hit a single to shortstop, but outs would end any further advancement for the Cougars, the Warriors still in the lead, 3-1.
  • The fifth inning was lackluster as there were quick outs from both teams, the score remaining stagnant as both made their way into the next inning.
  • The sixth inning broke open with a Warrior home run, the ball flying into left field for another run for the team. An easy three outs would follow that successful hit, putting the Cougars up to bat. Things would begin with Campos reaching first off of an error by the Warriors' shortstop. Charlize Gonzalez (Dallas, Texas), who came in to pinch run for Larenas after being walked, advanced Campos to second. Esmeralda Luevano (Chicago, Ill.), who then came in to pinch hit Pilas, was also walked, which advanced both Gonzalez and Campos into scoring position. Auger would hit a single to second base, advancing Pilas and Gonzalez while Campos scored. Gulsby then came to bat where a sacrifice fly would advance both Auger and Pilas, and allow for Gonzalez to score. Southern then singled to left field, allowing for both Auger and Pilas to score, putting the Cougars ahead of the Warriors for the first time. The inning would conclude with the Cougars taking the lead, 5-4.
  • In the final inning, the Warriors would only make it to second before all outs were collected, giving the Cougars game one, 5-4.

The Cougars clawed their way to the lead, taking game one from under the Warriors' noses, 5-4.

Game Two

Inside the Box Score

  • Southern returned in game two, going two for three at the plate, grabbing two runs and an RBI for the Cougars.
  • Morris went two for three at the plate in game two
  • Hadzic went one for two at the plate in game two, grabbing an RBI.
  • Morgan Houfek (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) took a win in the circle with two innings pitched and six batters faced, and Alyssa Lopez picked up her second save of the season with two innings pitched on six batters faced.

Here's What Happened

  • The second game began with the Warriors getting to third, a double being their only remarkable hit before the top of the inning would end. The Cougars came with a renewed motivation; Southern would start things off with hitting her second career home run to left field, scoring a run for the Cougars. Campos would then single to right field, followed up by Hadzic getting walked, advancing Campos to second. Morris would then single to the left side, advancing Campos and Hadzic into scoring position. The scoring for the inning would end there as the inning closed, the Cougars led, 1-0.
  • The second inning proved to be uneventful, both teams not striking up a lot of action and moving into the third inning, the score remaining the same.
  • The Cougars would quickly grab their outs, going into the bottom of the third. Southern started off with a single to left center field and proceeded to steal second. She then advanced to third as Campos got out at second. A single from Hadzic would lead Southern home for another Cougar run. A swing from Emily Lucero (Chino, Calif.) would lead to a successful double play from the Warriors, getting both her and Hadzic out to end the inning, the Cougars increased their lead, 2-0.
  • The Cougars would accomplish their own double play in the fourth inning against the Warriors, along with another out, putting them back up to bat. The Warriors would collect Cougar outs quickly, transitioning into the following inning.
  • The fifth inning would begin with another easy three outs from the Cougars, putting them back to bat. At the bottom of the fifth, Gulsby would hit a single to shortstop, but the Cougars would only get that far before the Warriors presented their eagerness to get back to batting in the next inning.
  • The Warriors would begin the sixth inning with some good plays, getting into scoring position. No runs would result from this, however, as the Cougars worked to get their outs. The Cougars started out with Morris singling to the right side, but outs would shut things down, the Cougars still in the lead, 2-0.
  • The final inning consisted of quick outs from the Cougars, the team grabbing the final win of the day, sweeping their opponents in game two, 2-0.
