WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – Returning to play after their off day, the Concordia University Chicago baseball team took the field to play Saint Mary's University (Minn.). Despite some late rallies from the Cougars, they would fall 9-3.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Cam Buckley (New Lenox, Ill.) led the Cougars going three-for-five at the plate with two RBIs, including one solo home run.
- Reid Benner (Pittsboro, Ind.) went two-for-three at the plate, making his way on base in every at-bat.
- Samuel Beringer (Plainfield, Ill.) pitched his first two career innings for the Cougars, picking up one strikeout while only allowing one hit in seven batters faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars held the Cardinals scoreless in top of the inning as Dylan Ferraro (Windsor, Colo.) closed out the inning with a strikeout. In the bottom of the inning, a quick three up, three down put the Cougar defense right back to work. In the top of the second, the Cardinals got to work quickly and put two runners on after back-to-back walks. A sacrifice bunt then moved the runners into scoring position. Three more hits would tack on four more runs before a double play from Ferraro to Richie Sperando (Darien, Ill.) to Jack Linko (New Lenox, Ill.) would close the inning.
- The Cougars would once again struggle at the plate with Benner as the lone hit in four batters to send things back to the Cougar defense. The top of the third would see the Cardinals tack on two more runs on two more hits and leave the Cougars trailing by six as they headed to the bottom of the order.
- Back-to-back strikeouts would put two outs on the board before a Buckley single would jump start the offense. Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) got himself going with a single to put two runners on base with nobody out. Unable to convert, the Cougars would leave two stranded and the Cougars scoreless.
- The game would sit still until the top of the fifth where a leadoff single would put a runner on base before an error would move him around the bags to extend out to a 7-0 lead.
- The Cougars would tack on their first run of the day off a solo home run over the right field fence to put some life back into the team.
- The top of the sixth would see some defensive changes for the Cougars with Connor Jerkatis (New Lenox, Ill.) in at third base, J. Mahler moving over to second base, and Sperando over to short stop. The Cardinals would add another run on after two more hits to take the 9-1 lead.
- The offense wouldn't take flight again until the bottom of the ninth, where a leadoff single from Sperando paired with a Jerkatis walk would put two runners on and Austin Koberstein (Milwaukee, Wis.) at the plate. A single to right field would load the bases before Josiah King (Fairland, Ind.) would score one while a single from Buckley would score another and the Cougars would close the game 9-3.
