Marian Holds Off Late Cougar Charge

River Forest, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's basketball team welcomed the Sabres of Marian University onto their home court. After an intense battle, the Sabres took the game with a final score of 74-63.

 

Inside the Box Score:

  • Jacob Robinson (Saint Louis, Mo.) led the afternoon's game with 16 points, a rebound, two assists and a steal.
  • Matthew Guthrie (Carlyle, Ill.) concluded the afternoon's game with 10 points, five rebounds, an assist and a block.
  • Kenton Pryor (Hazel Crest, Ill.) ended the afternoon's game with nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
 

Here's What Happened

First Half

The Sabres grabbed the first point of the half off of a free throw. Darrian Williams (Garland, Texas) got a jumper in and the teams tied up with a three-pointer from Robinson. The Sabres got a layup in, putting the Cougars within two. The Sabres pushed forward and had hit a three, leading by seven. Aaron Brown (Joliet, Ill.) got in a tip-in layup, 9-16. Brown proceeded to land his first three of the afternoon. The Sabres reached a 10-point advantage against the Cougars. Gurthie joined his teammates in scoring with a jumper. The Sabres continued to power through the Cougars, leaving them in a 13-point deficit. The Cougars tried to push back with a layup from Robinson. The Sabres entered halftime in the lead against the Cougars at 37-20.



 

Second Half

Robinson and Guthrie had gotten the first points of the second half. The Cougars pushed the deficit back down to 13 points with a layup from Pryor off the fast break. The Sabres broke 40; Robinson had gotten up a layup from an opponent turnover, finally breaking 30 for the Cougars. The Sabres had the Cougars at a 20-point disadvantage, the biggest deficit of the game. Ryker Johnson (Fond du Lac, Wis.) fought back against the deficit with a jumper, 36-54. Guthrie came back in with a signature layup. AJ Willard Germantown, Wis.) drops the disadvantage down to 17 points with a jumper. A short break for the teams riled the teams up - Johnson laid down a nice three for the Cougars, 44-58. Pryor and Willard got in some more layups, slowly eating away at the point gap. Andreas Louloudis (Thessaloniki, Greece) got some points under his belt with a layup. Willard attacked at the rim, getting the deficit down to under 10. After a bit of a scoring drought, Pryor put up his last efforts with a three. Robinson had hit two driving layups, bringing the Cougars within 10. The Sabres took the game with a final score of 74-63.



 

What's Next
