MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's soccer team continued its stretch of road games with a trip up north to face the Falcons of Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW). The Cougars never quit and even scored a late goal, but an early lead for the Falcons proved to be the difference as they took the game 2-1.
Inside the Box
Both squads had seven shots on frame.
Leonardo Pedraza (Waukegan, Ill.) scored the Cougars' lone goal, assisted by
Damian Navas (Chicago, Ill.).
Matthew Laboy (Chicago, Ill.) led the offense with three shots, two of which were on frame.
Nethan Gudiel (Chicago, Ill.) and
Chase Zizak (Muskegon, Mich.) split time in goal. Gudiel made four saves while Zizak made one.
First Half
Both squads battled for possession, but it was the Cougars who first tested their opponent.
Evan Miranda (Chicago, Ill.) forced the Falcons' goalkeeper to make a save in the seventh minute. Navas,
Adrian Adame (Cicero, Ill.), and
Daniel Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill.) all continued to put pressure on CUW's defense.
On the defensive side of the ball, CUC limited the Falcons shot selection, forcing CUW to shoot away from the goal.
In the 20
th minute, Gudiel made back-to-back critical saves to keep the score level.
The teams would both battle for chances but neither side could find the go-ahead until the 38
th minute when the Falcons put one past Gudiel to go up 1-0.
Four minutes later, the Falcons doubled their lead and held off the Cougars to the halftime whistle.
Second Half
Ronald Bardales (Zion, Ill.) took an early chance to cut into the lead in the 53
rd minute but was stopped by the CUW goalkeeper. Laboy and Navas also took shots on frame but couldn't get it past the goalkeeper.
Defensively, the Cougars did their job, limiting the Falcons' offensive attacks and quality chances. Zizak's lone save of the half came in the 75
th minute.
In the 86
th minute, Navas slotted a ball into the box and found Pedraza, who smashed it into the back of the net. Unfortunately, it was a little too late for the Cougars to lodge a full comeback and CUC fell short, 2-1.
