Second Half Rally Ends in Tie Against Buccaneers

BELOIT, Wis. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team took to the road for the first time this season to face the Buccaneers of Beloit College. After a tight back-and-forth battle in the first half, the Cougars outshined the Buccaneers in the second half but would only manage to walk away with a 1-1 draw. CUC is now 0-4-1 this season.
 
Inside the Box
  • CUC outshot Beloit 23 to 10, with 12 shots on target.
  • Angelina Barreno (Chicago, Ill.) scored for the Cougars.
  • Erika Flores (Oxnard, Calif.) led the offensive charge with nine shots and four on frame.
  • Mia Hirayama (Mililani, Hawaii) and Sofia Cazares (Rockford, Ill.) each totaled four shots.
  • Splitting time in goal was Naomi Gonzales (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Brooke Sheriff (Simi Valley, Calif.). Gonzales registered five saves in 56 minutes of action while Sheriff saved the Buccaneers' only chance in the second half.
 
First Half
  • Gonzales made a quick save in the first four minutes of the game. However, just three minutes later the Buccaneers would earn a free kick and take an early 1-0 lead.
  •  In response, the Cougars prowled up the field and earned a corner kick. E. Flores took back-to-back shots but couldn't find the net.
  • CUC continued to find chances up top and put Beloit under more pressure, starting in the 17th minute. Hirayama let off two shots that forced Beloit's goalkeeper to make a save and give the Cougars another corner kick. Off the kick, Cazares found two opportunities for herself, forcing another save from the Beloit goalkeeper.
  • Gonzales made a save in the 30th minute to deny the Buccaneers. Two minutes later, E. Flores and Hirayama continued to knock at the door but still couldn't slip one past Beloit's goalkeeper.
  • In the final eight minutes of the half, Gonzales made two saves to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of Beloit.
 
Second Half
  • The Cougars pounced in the second half, outshooting the Buccaneers 13 to one.
  • Cazares immediately forced the Buccaneers' goalkeeper into making a save in the 49th minute. The Cougars kept the ball in their offensive zone, earning two corner kicks and having another shot of Hirayama's saved.
  • CUC was able to capitalize on an opportunity in the 61st minute. After a nice ball up the field, the Cougars were able to slot it into the box to Barreno, who easily knocked it into the net to tie the game.
  • The Cougars didn't let up as E. Flores and Natalie Flores (Placentia, Calif.) created chances for themselves in the 64th and 65th minute. E. Flores continued to be a menace up top for the Cougars, creating three more chances that put pressure on Beloit's goalkeeper.
  • In the 82nd minute, Sheriff stood her ground and denied the Buccaneers their only chance in the second half.
  • Alexa Martinez (Downey, Calif.) got herself in the mix in the final minute of the game. Unfortunately, her shot was saved by the Buccaneer's goalkeeper, and the Cougars would only walk away with a 1-1 draw.

What's Next
