How It Happened
First Quarter
The Warriors received the ball to start the game and started at their own 12-yard line. WLC was able to bring the ball downfield, securing two first downs in the drive. A 5-yard tackle for loss by
Jordan Lacey (Belleville, Ill.) and
Louis Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) on third down and six forced the Warriors to punt and give possession to the Cougars. CUC was unable to secure the first down but played strong defensively on WLC's next drive with
Hagan Wascher (Frankenmuth, Mich.) breaking up a pass to deny the first down, sending the ball back to the Cougars' offense. Brown led the charge, rushing for six yards on the first two snaps, but a sack on third and four, forced the Cougars to punt the ball again. The Warriors were able to take advantage of starting on the Cougars' 37-yard line and drove down to the endzone, rushing for 13-yards on the final play for the touchdown. However, WLC missed the extra point attempt to lead 6-0 with 4:04 remaining in the quarter. Wascher returned the kickoff for 23-yards, setting CUC up on their own 28. An 8-yard pass to Brown and a 7-yard rush from Jackson gave the Cougars a first. However, an incomplete pass and sack forced the Cougars to punt, ending the quarter with the Warriors having possession and a 6-0 lead.
Â
Second Quarter
WLC opened the quarter with a 63-yard touchdown pass and a successful two-point conversion to go up 14-0. CUC retook possession and immediately secured a first down with an 11-yard rush from
Kevon Lawson (Pompano Beach, Fla.) to advance to the Cougars' 36-yard line. Three quick rushes from Lawson, Brown, and
Colton Bosch (Coopersville, Mich.) gave CUC another first down as the Cougars made their way up the field, but an interception would erase the progress the Cougars made.
Brandon Shipp (Bolingbrook, Ill.) wouldn't let the Warriors take advantage however, recording a seven-yard sack to make it second and 17. After WLC only picked up a yard,
Adam Lambaz (Elgin, Ill.) made a four-yard tackle for loss to force the Warriors to punt the ball.
Â
Â
A few incomplete passes riddled both teams next drives and Concordia took possession again with 6:52 left in the half. An eight-yard rush from Bosch and a four-yard rush from Brown gave the Cougars a first down on their own 37. CUC made some forward movement, but an interception on third and eight put the Warriors back on offense. WLC would slowly make their way up the field and record another touchdown just before the end of the half to make it 21-0.
Â
Third Quarter
Starting on their own 28, CUC quickly secured a first down with a 22-yard rush from Brown.
Â
Â
Blake Henson (Potosi, Mo.) and Bosch each ran the ball to secure a first down and then Redmond rushed for 24-yards to get the third first down of the drive. Now on WLC's 30-yard line, the Cougars battled to secure another first down with an eight-yard rush from Brown. Brown then rushed up the middle for 11 yards, down to the five-yard line. Unfortunately, the Cougars couldn't capitalize on their position. While the Cougars denied the Warriors on their next drive up the field, they weren't as fortunate upon receiving the football again. The Warriors picked off the Cougars for an eight-yard touchdown. With extra point good, WLC led 28-0 heading into the final quarter.
Â
Fourth Quarter
Starting at the CUC 35-yard line, Lawson led the opening drive with two receptions to secure the first down.
Jaxon Martinus (Birch Run, Mich.) then caught a 12-yard pass from Redmond to move the Cougars into WLC territory, but the progress was stopped short by the Warriors. Stroer single-handedly stopped the Warriors' next drive, and the Cougars regained possession. While CUC couldn't take advantage of the next drive, the momentum continued to swing its favor as Espinoza forced a fumble that was recovered by
Zack Puracchio (Channahon, Ill.) on the WLC 44-yard line. With renewed vigor, CUC charged down the field, starting with a pass to Jackson for 28 yards and a first down. Now on the 16-yard line, Martinus caught a pass for four yards to bring the Cougars closer to the endzone. On third and six, Redmond's 12-yard pass to Hall was complete and the Cougars put themselves on the board. Unfortunately, time ran short for CUC and they fell 28-6 to the Warriors.
