PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team continued Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) play as they traveled to Wisconsin to take on the Muskies of Lakeland University. The Cougars quickly took charge and never looked back, winning 5-0.
Inside the Box
- All five goals were the first career goals of each goal scorer this afternoon: Grace Chavez (Morgan Hill, Calif.), Morgan Burnap (Strafford, N.H.), Luciana Morán Cruz (Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico), Stacey Maskery (Alfreton, England), and Lucie Carter (Valparaiso, Ind.).
- The Cougars outshot the Muskies 22 to four, with 16 shots on frame.
- Mia Hirayama (Mililani, Hawaii) totaled five shots with three on goal and an assist.
- Sofia Cazares (Rockford, Ill.), Erika Flores (Oxnard, Calif.), Morán Cruz, and Chavez each registered two shots on goal.
First Half
- Angelina Barreno (Chicago, Ill.) got the first shot off in the game, setting the tempo early. A few minutes later, the Muskies came down the field, but CUC didn't allow them to get a clean enough shot to be on frame.
- In the 12th minute, Alexa Martinez (Downey, Calif.) forced a low save from Lakeland's goalkeeper, knocking at the door.
- The Cougars kept the ball in their offensive zone and after having her shot saved a minute before, Chavez received the ball at the top of the box from Hirayama, settled it, and put the ball in the lower corner to take a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
- Right after the kickoff, CUC continued their barrage of shots with Hirayama having back-to-back shots saved. The Cougars never let the ball into their defensive half, as Cazares, Hirayama, Morán Cruz, and Julia Urbanczyk (New Lenox, Ill.) continued to create and take chances up top.
- In the 38th minute, Burnap received the ball 25 yards out from the goal and blasted it into the side netting to double the lead.
- The lead extended to 3-0 in the 43rd minute. Jasleen Grewal (Bakersfield, Calif.) spliced the ball through two defenders to Morán Cruz who drove the ball into the back of the net.
Second Half
- Flores continued CUC's momentum, forcing a save from the Muskies' goalkeeper after just under two minutes into the half.
- Chavez, Cazares, Flores, and Hirayama continued to challenge the Muskies and look for another goal, but strong defense and skill from Lakeland's goalkeeper kept the Cougars at 3-0.
- After a round of substitutions, CUC's persistence finally paid off in the 76th minute. Michelle Marecki (Lombard, Ill.) crossed the ball into the box from the corner. It went over the goalkeeper's head and Maskery was on the backside to clean up and place the ball in the back of the net.
- Carter rounded out the scoring in the 84th minute, chipping it over the goalkeeper and give the Cougars the 5-0 victory.
