Cougars Can’t Hold Off Second-Half Surge from Muskies

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's soccer team competed against the Muskies of Lakeland University this afternoon in a hard-fought Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) matchup. CUC started strong but ultimately fell 5-2.

Inside the Box
  • Kyle Schultz (Pingree, Ill.) recorded a career-high 11 saves in goal this afternoon.
  • Giovanni Lechuga (Monrovia, Calif.) led the Cougars offensively with three shots, two on frame, and one going in the back of the net.
  • Bernardo Delgado (Morelia, Michoacán) scored CUC's other goal, having two shots on the day.
  • Giovanni Velasquez (Cicero, Ill.) also had a shot on frame.
  • Michael Senese (Naperville, Ill.) tallied both assists.

First Half
  • Roman Klozik (New Lenox, Ill.) took the first shot for CUC in the 11th minute, but it wound up just over the net. The Cougars kept the ball up in the offensive half, earning a corner kick, but it was quickly brought back down by the Muskies towards Schultz, who made a big save.
  • Schultz then distributed the ball, and Velasquez found his opportunity but was denied by the Muskies' goalkeeper.
  • The teams battled back-and-forth until the Cougars broke the stalemate in the 20th minute. Senese used his skill to keep the ball in the box and lay the ball off to Delgado who blasted the ball into the back of the net.
  • Afterwards, the Muskies found their rhythm, but Schultz stood strong in net, making four more saves in the saves to preserve the Cougars' lead heading into the break.

Second Half
  • Two minutes into the half, Senese brought the ball down to the end line and laid it off towards the top of the box. It fell into the path of Lechuga, who perfectly placed it into the bottom left corner to double lead.
  • The extended lead was short lived as the Muskies scored right off the kickoff to make it 2-1.
  • While Andre Wangandu (Lansing, Mich.) and Lechuga would keep creating chances forward for the Cougars, Lakeland found a way to tie the game in the 62nd minute.
  • With the momentum now on their side, the Muskies limited CUC's chances and took the lead in the 68th minute.
  • Despite continuous saves from Schultz, Lakeland were able to score twice more and take the game 5-2.
