Cougars Show Grit in Iowa Road Trip

Mount Vernon, Iowa  - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars women's tennis team traveled to Iowa for two games to finish off the weekend. At 9:00 AM the team competed against Cornell College and their second game against Wartburg College at 12:30 PM. After a full day of competition, the Cougars fell in both 7-0.

Game One

Singles:

  • In singles, Amelia Engelman (McKinney, Texas) fought a tough battle where set one was a close 6-4, but she could not maintain the same energy in the second set and fell 6-0.
  • Hannah Upole (Hinkley, Ohio.), Arriyanna Amison (Dolton, Ill.), and Courtneye Schneider (Plainfield, Ill.) all put up two points in each set of play, but could not find the surge they needed to obtain more points.

Doubles:

  • The duo of Engelman and Amirah Shakir (Dekalb, Ill.) showed the will to win. The match was a thrilling showcase of skill and determination from both sides, as neither team was able to break away with a clear lead. The intense competition forced the set to be decided by a tiebreak. With valiant effort, the two never gave up, but ultimately they fell 65-77.

Game Two

Singles:

  • Engelman again put up the biggest fight in her singles match, where in the first set she fell after a close 6-4 set, and in the second she fell 6-1.
  • Shakir put up a fight in her match, but ultimately fell in both sets, 6-2, and 6-1 respectively.
  • The Cougars fell in all other singles matches played where scores were 6-1 and 6-0.

Doubles:

  • Engelman and Shakir had the closest run in doubles where they were the lone duo to score. Unfortunately, after hard fought battles they fell 6-2.
