Sheriff Secures Career-High Saves in Narrow Loss to MSOE

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team continued Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) play this afternoon, hosting the Raiders of Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). It was a close back-and-forth battle, but MSOE came out on top 2-0.

Inside the Box
  • Brooke Sheriff (Simi Valley, Calif.) recorded a career-high 13 saves.
  • Natalie Flores (Placentia, Calif.) led the offensive charge with both of her shots on frame.
  • Sofia Cazares (Rockford, Ill.) and Angelina Barreno (Chicago, Ill.) each created two chances for themselves, while Cazares had one of those on frame.

First Half
  • Within the first minute of the game, Sheriff was put under pressure. Looking through traffic in the box, Sheriff was able to find the shot to the right side of the net and make the save. Sheriff then sent the ball downfield to give the Cougars their own opportunity. The ball came to Flores' feet, but she was denied by Raiders' goalkeeper.
  • Sheriff continued to be a brick wall for the Cougars, facing multiple shots as the Cougars tried to tame the Raiders' offense. Cazares and Alexa Martinez (Downey, Calif.) managed to breakthrough MSOE's defense and create back-to-back chances in the 19th minute but couldn't find the net.
  • The Cougars couldn't hold the Raiders' offense longer, as MSOE broke through in the 28th minute to take the lead, 1-0.
  • Cazares answered by forcing the Raiders' goalkeeper to make a save up high in the 32nd minute. Sheriff would make two more saves in the half to keep CUC within one.

Second Half
  • The Cougars regrouped at the break and came out strong with Erika Flores (Oxnard, Calif.) ripping a shot in the 48th minute.
  • The Cougar defense kept the Raiders at bay for almost twenty minutes, not letting them get a clean shot on target.
  • N. Flores tried her luck again in the 62nd minute, but the MSOE goalkeeper kept the ball out of the net. The Raiders then made their way down to the Cougars' defensive half, forcing Sheriff to make a diving save, with MSOE earning a corner. Sheriff continued to show her skill and make yet another save.
  • Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Raiders would double their lead after a misplayed ball by the Cougar defense went into the net behind Sheriff in the 75th minute.
  • From then on, the Cougars struggled to put themselves in dangerous forward positions. Sheriff would make two more saves in the game, but CUC would lose 2-0.
