Cougars Fall in Opening Game of NACC Tournament

GLENDALE, WIS. -- Day one of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) tournament, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars took the field for game number one as the three seed, taking on the six seed in the Edgewood College Eagles. The Cougars would fall to a successful Eagles squad, who would head into day two with three wins in the tournament under their belt.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the long Cougar to pick up multiple hits on the day, going two-for-four at the plate.
  • Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) was responsible for the lone run on the day, going one-for-four at the plate with one RBI.
  • Four Cougars dished on the mound in Ryan Renella (Bartlett, Ill.), Bryce Jones (Ottowa, Ill.), Benjamin Tietyen (Oak Creek, Wis.), and Eliot Higgins (Park Ridge, Ill.).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A quick three up, three down in the top of the first allowed the Cougars to get behind their bats first, but one hit would leave two runners on base the not allow CUC to capitalize on what they started. The Eagles would take advantage of this new chance to strike first and put up two runs in the top of the second off two hits and two walks.
  • A three up, three down bottom of the second and top of the third would allow Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) to get on base with a walk where he would make his way to third, but yet again be stranded and unable to cut into the Edgewood lead.
  • The game would sit scoreless until the top of the eighth were the Eagles would tack on two more runs off three hits and leave the Cougars still shutout with time dwindling.
  • The bottom of the ninth would see a leadoff triple from Krater paired with a single from Mahler to officially put the Cougars on the board. With a walk from Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) and a single from Connor Jerkatis (New Lenox, Ill.) the bases would be loaded, but with Mahler trying to find his way home he would be tagged out and put one out on the board and hold off the run.
  • A double play to end the game would leave the Cougars stunned and leave the Eagles ecstatic with the final score of 4-1.
The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow, May 9th, with the early game once again. Taking on the #4 Benedictine University Eagles at 10:00 am, coverage can be found at cucougars.com.
