Cougars Jump Ahead in NACC Play With Sweep Over Eagles

RIVER FOREST, ILL. - The Concordia University Chicago baseball team took the sweep over the Edgewood College Eagles after pulling the tight victory in game one and the shutout in game two.

GAME ONE: 8-7 W

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) led the way going four-for-four at the plate with two RBIs and two runs in the game.
  • Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) followed behind with three hits in the game with oee RBI.
  • Richie Sperando (Darien, Ill.) went two-for-three at the plate with one RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars fought tough in the top of the first with Scott dishing on the mound, One hit allowed runners on base, but hard work from the Cougars would get out of the inning with no damage done.
  • Heading to the bottom of the first, the Cougars got on the board first after a single from Dorsch would put a runner on base. Kasik would send a long shot over the right field fence in his first at bat to put the Cougars ahead 2-0.
  • The Eagles would strike right back with a four run inning in the top of the second and bust things open to force CUC to work the remainder of the game.
  • The two squads traded blows in the third and fourth innings. After a Cougar single in the third plated a run, the Eagles would strike back right away.. CUC replied quickly with an RBI double in the fourth to cut the Eagles lead to 5-4.
  • With the Eagles taking the 6-4 lead in the top of the fifth, the Cougars kicked off a late rally. A leadoff single from Krater paired with a pair of outfield singles from Cam Buckley (New Lenox, Ill.) and Richie Sperando (Darien, Ill.) plated a run each to even the game. A while a sacrifice bunt from Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind) pushed the hosts ahead 7-6 after five complete innings.
  • With Jack Linko (New Lenox, Ill.) dishing on the mound for CUC, the Eagles would see a scoreless inning in the sixth and the seventh while the Cougar hitters would get to work.
  • The bottom of the seventh would see the Cougars extend their lead to a two-run advantage after hits from Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and Connor Jerkatis (New Lenox, Ill.) that would put the final runs up of the day.
  • In the top of the ninth, Kyle Connelly (New Lenox, Ill.) would come in for relief and pitch three outs in four batters to retire the game with the CUC victory.

GAME TWO: 3-0 W

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Dom Owens (Frankfurt, Ill.) went two-for-two at the plate as he collected two RBIs on his two hits.
  • On the defensive end, Michael Southard (Northbrook, Ill.) dished for the Cougars and went five innings with three strikeouts as Eliot Higgins (Park Ridge, Ill.) closed three innings of relief for the Cougars.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southard got to work right away for the Cougars and a quick top of the first would hand things over to the Cougar hitters where a triple from Kasik would jumpstart things and extend his hot day. A double from Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would score the first run of the game.
  • A back-and-forth battle for the two teams would ensue as the starting pitchers would work on the mound as a total of 30 batters in four and a half innings would see the plate with less than 100 pitches combined on the day.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, a leadoff double from Dorsch would jump start things and put a runner on second while an intentional walk for Kasik would put two runners on. With J. Mahler advancing the runners, another intentional walk with only one out would load the bases up for Owens. Owens, one-for-one at the plate at this point, sent a chopper to right field and score two runs on the bases loaded scenario to give the Cougars their first runs since the first inning.
  • Higgins would lock down Edgewood the rest of the way for the save, only allowing one hit and striking out two in four innings pitched.

The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to take on the Aurora Spartans. First pitch is slated for noon and coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
