Battle of the Chicagos Ends In Cougar Victory

River Forest, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars baseball team hosted the Maroons of University of Chicago where there was a great Chicago throwdown. After a few back and forth exchanges of the lead, the Cougars took over and won the battle of the Chicago's 7-5.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) went two for four on the day where he had three RBIs, ran in two runs, and a homerun that allowed the Cougars to take and maintain the lead.
  • Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.), Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.), Connor Jerkatis (New Lenox, Ill.), and Xavier Zagerman (Chandler, Ariz.) each picked up one hit on the day.
  • Connor FitzGerald (Chicago, Ill.) picked up his first win on the mound and Eliot Higgins (Park Ridge, Ill.) picked up his third save of the season.

Here's What Happened:

  • The Maroons had a batter hit by pitch followed by a single to right field, putting runners on first and third but the Cougar defense prevailed leaving both stranded on and no danger done.
  • At the bottom of the first, Dorsch had a lead off single to left field, followed by Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) who was walked which advanced Dorsch to second. Krater crushed a single to left field bringing Dorsch home and advanced Kasik to second. Cougars were first on the board, leading 1-0.
  • With bases loaded after Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) was walked, a two RBI single up the middle by Boswell brought home both Kasik and Krater. Rounding out the inning, the Cougars had an early 3-0 lead.
  • A pair of singles for the Maroons at the top of the second brought in one run, but the Cougars maintained their lead 3-1 heading into the bottom of the second.
  • The Cougars had a quick three up three down in the bottom of the inning, putting the Maroons back up to bat where they scored three runs after a bases loaded situation where they took the lead 4-3.
  • Moving to the bottom of the fourth, Boswell was hit by a pitch placing him on first where he then stole second to place himself into scoring position. Zagerman had his first hit of the day with a double up the middle allowing Boswell to get home and tie the game up at four apiece.
  • After Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) was hit by a pitch and a pair of steals by Zagerman and Hickman put runners on first and third. Dorsch had a ground out to shortstop, but the out allowed Zagerman to get home and the Cougars took the lead once again. Heading into the top of the fifth, the Cougars led 5-4.
  • Neither team scored in the fifth inning and the lone hit of the inning was from the Maroons, but in the top of the sixth, the Maroons were able to put up a run to tie the game up once again.
  • Hickman was first on base for the Cougars at the bottom of the inning after being walked. Functioning on two outs, Dorsch hit a homerun to put the Cougars back on top 7-5.
  • The Maroons had a bases loaded situation in the top of the seventh, but the Cougar defense did what they needed to get out of the inning with no damage done.
  • In the bottom of the seventh and entire eighth inning, neither team brought home anyone, so heading into the top of the ninth the Cougars remained in control.
  • The Cougars had a MASSIVE defensive final inning in the ninth, where Higgins had a strikeout, Kasik had a diving play, and Mahler caught one of the Maroons stealing to round out the game.
