River Forest, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars softball team kicked off their game week with a rescheduled Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) double-header against the Spartans of Aurora University. The Cougars fell 12-2 in game one but had a monster comeback in game two and won 7-1, splitting with the Spartans.
Game One
Inside the Box Score
- McKyler Morris (Belvidere, Ill.) went two for three on game one with one RBI.
- Ashley Shroll (Tampa, Fla.) and Eden Pufahl (Laguna Hills, Calif.) each had one hit on three at bats in the game.
- Pufahl pitched 5.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Here's What Happened
- The Spartans had a strong opening inning where they had four runs on five hits taking an early 4-0 run.
- Shroll got the first hit for the Cougars at the bottom of the third with a single to center field and then advanced to second on a wild pitch but was left stranded after the Spartans got themselves out of the inning.
- The Cougars played a great defensive game only allowing the Spartans one more hit, but heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans led 4-0.
- At the bottom of the fifth, Mayah Larenas (Chino, Calif.) singled to right field, and Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.) singled to left field putting runners on first and second.
- A rocket single by Morris would allow Hadzic to advance to third and bring home Larenas, putting the first run on the board for the Cougars.
- The final run for the Cougars in the inning would be thanks to an Pufahl single to center field, bringing home Hadzic. The Cougars now trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
- At the top of the fifth, the Cougars would allow one hit to center field, but was matched at the bottom of the inning with a single to shortstop by Emily Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.). Katelyn Smith (Chatsworth, Ga.) would have a sacrifice bunt to advance Garcia to second but with the Spartan defense on lock, Garcia was left on base. Heading into the top of the sixth, the score remained 4-2.
- In the remaining innings, the Spartans put up eight more runs, in which the Cougars could not respond and fell 12-2.
Game Two

- Jessica Geng (Phoenix, Ariz.), Garcia, Smith, and Larenas all went two for four, where each added at least one RBI.
- Shroll pitched all seven innings with one strikeout and only allowed five hits.
Here's What Happened
- Garcia started off the Cougar offense at the top of the first with a single up the middle but was forced out on a fielder's choice, placing Smith on first. Larenas hit a single out to center field, allowing Smith to advance to second, placing runners on first and second.
- Alyssa Campos doubled to left center, running in Smith and advancing Larenas to third. The Cougars were on the scoreboard first, leading 1-0, heading into the top of the second.
- The Spartans were unable to match the Cougar momentum in the top of the second, but the Cougar offense charged on at the bottom of the second.
- Morris kicked off the second with a deep double to center field, and Linley Southern was hit by a pitch placing runners on first and second. The two later advanced to second and third on a wild pitch.
- Operating with two outs, Smith singled through the right side, allowing both Southern and Morris to get home, increasing the lead to 3-0 before heading into the top of the fourth.
- In the third, neither team scored, but at the top of the fourth, the Spartans put up a singular run to make the score 3-1, as the Cougars were unable to answer this run until the bottom of the fifth.
- Smith singled through the right side and Geng doubled to center field, advancing Smith to third. To round out the scoring in the inning, a single to right field by Larenas brought home Smith, increasing their lead 4-1.
- A quick three up three down at the top of the sixth, put the Cougars right back up to bat.
- Morris was the lead off batter for the Cougars and walked putting a Cougar on base very quickly. A grounded out would allow Morris to advance to second and then Kallie Tierney (Corona, Calif.) had a single to the pitcher, putting runners on first and third. Tierney would then steal second placing herself in scoring position. A single through the right side by Garcia would bring home Morris and advance Tierney to third making the score 5-1.
- To round out the scoring, Geng singled up the middle bringing home both Tierney and Garcia and increasing the score to 7-1.
- The Spartans were unable to match the Cougar offense and the Cougars would take game two 7-1.
